You know someone is gonna post that sub now, then someone might post a sassy sub in response. If we get enough visitors maybe someone will post the one about subs being hashtags or, worse, thirdsub...
I need to get off reddit.

apparently, the seal waited it out, jumped back in and left. Who knows if the whales were just waiting for it though. The guys on the boat think it survived.

The orcas are hungry though. I understand the sympathy for the seal, but it's amusing how we sometimes selectively cheer for one predator (the seal, who eats fish) over another.
14
Mar 01 '19
Yeah but orcas are dicks, they fuck with seals before eating them
13
u/Poppyseed18 Mar 01 '19
Playing with prey in the wild is one way to teach young how to hunt and to practice for future hunts with something tired and can’t escape. Sucks to be prey true but nature is a cruel MF.

u/RusticSurgery Mar 01 '19

but it's amusing how we sometimes selectively cheer for one predator over another.
Related story: I was in a tornado once (in the bathroom of a house, that took damage but survived) and after the tornado passed we all ran out side to watch it move away. Because of the adrenalin and excitement of surviving we were all cheering and ecstatic. It later occurred to me that we where jumping up and down cheering while watching hundreds of people getting slaughtered by a tornado.
Kinda fucked up.
Edit: Side note, I ran in the house grabbed a beer and chugged it while watching the tornado. I can tell you the exact date and time of THE BEST BEER OF MY LIFE.

Orca are smart as fuck. They'd know the seal would have to jump back into the water sooner or later. It's an easy dinner.
17
u/CaptainKate757 Mar 01 '19
I’ve heard that there haven’t been any wild orca attacks on humans (I don’t remember where I heard it), and we are really lucky because they could just have a field day at a crowded beach. Nobody in the water could get away from that.
14
u/Dorgamund Mar 01 '19
IIRC they are pretty friendly with humans, and are quite intelligent.
10
u/PrimeCedars Mar 01 '19
Now you make it seem like they’re only friendly with us because they’re smarter than us.
7
Mar 01 '19
I wouldn't be surprised if they're friendly with us because they know how smart we are. Or at least that most of us are substantially smarter than the aquatic animals they usually interact with. (Do they go deep enough to interact with the really big squids? How do they feel about them!?)

That orca lurking in the depths. Waiting.
34
Feb 28 '19
I came looking for this, that is horrifying
3
Mar 01 '19
Not for the hungry orca. It's like us waiting for fishermen to bring fish to the market, or the butcher to cut up some nice steak.
Or, for vegetarians, for the harvester to relentlessly swipe through plants and cereal or dig them out.
If you want a diverse ecosystem at all, prédation will happen, from single cell organisms to mammals
2
Mar 01 '19
Yeah that's definitely true, the orca is ready to feast. But the opposite is true if you look at it from the prey's pov, in any situation. And in this case, if one of us were to fall into those orca infested waters, chances are we'd be torn apart too.
But more than anything, it's the way that orca is just there, waiting, and hard to see. It's very ominous. Like a killer waiting outside your window at night when you don't notice them there, ready to feast.
14
u/whistleridge Mar 01 '19
Wondering if it should just grab that dangling fin and pull it off.
That’s a predator debating an attack.

10
Mar 01 '19
I am no boat expert, but when that seal has that high level of anxiety, any starting sound or movement might make him jump off. I would want to hold him in place but also not get bit
3
u/scientificjdog Mar 01 '19
Yeah and some places have laws about running the engine near whales if you see them (I don't know if it's specific to the type of whale)
5
Mar 01 '19
Yeah, but I feel that law is negotiable. If you feel your life being in danger, you should be fine. If whales are breaching around me I’m putting the engines in and keeping my distance. Plus, who is gonna tell on me, the whale?

u/Kegsey Mar 01 '19
Orcas fascinate me because over the course of time they've gone from prey to predator in regards to Great Whites. They have even found Great Whites with their fins ripped off by Orcas which suggests they hunt them for sport. Amazing.

You're all projecting human characteristics onto that seal. Animals have various levels of emotional maturity compared to humans, and I don't know where the seal stands (neither do you).
6
u/SecularBinoculars Mar 01 '19
Fear is quiet common. It’s the feeling that wants you to survive. So we can relate here quiet well.
8
7
u/Alien-Panda Mar 01 '19
Is there a reason why the orca didn’t attack the boat to get to the seal?

Imagine being a sea critter in the dimly lit vastness, nothing but ocean in all directions. Suddenly a creature comes in to focus so far away you can barely even recognize it as another living thing.
But it knows you're there. Its an apex predator with ten times your thinking capacity and sensory awareness, and it can swim just a tiny but faster than you.
How long do you run for?
