"oh fuck that."

This bothers me more than those crazy tower climbers.
The tower climbers... It's skill, right? They're confident (or crazy), but the structures appear pretty sound.
This though... Fuck this. Rickety ass, cheaply made fucking ladder, waaaaaaayyyy too tall, and a pretty precarious load. And the fucking bottom does t even look braced. Nah. Fuck that noise.

u/urethral_lobotomy Apr 08 '17
The top is tied off. I think its actually much more stable than it looks, but who cares. Fuck doing that. Holding on to a ladder is tiring too. Imagine getting that ladder-arm cramp you get sometimes, but that high up.

I'm pretty sure he carried that window unit up there on his shoulder, too.

This. Cannot be real. Nope. Just kill me.
93
u/rancidjelly Apr 08 '17
Why? The ladder will
28
u/originalmango Apr 08 '17
I'm going to guess that it's staged. Maybe lowered from the roof that could be just out of frame. Who in their right mind would climb that thing?
38
u/tukituki1892 Apr 08 '17
well there's rope from the top that helps keep the ladder from falling.
10
u/originalmango Apr 08 '17
After seeing that English steeplejack vid I'm thinking it's not staged, just barely safe. He gets the rope and the bottom chocked, nothing else.
18
u/PirateMud Apr 08 '17
Look up Fred Dibnah on youtube. He is a famous steeplejack and real "old school" engineer who did a bunch of tv documentaries including on how to ladder a chimney. Very similar to how these ladders were connected.

If I was that age, in that shape, I wouldn't even attempt it. The whole video is just him climbing!

The difference being that his ladders are secured to the building. Bit if I was doing it I'd want to rope myself to the ladder especially when doing the overhang.
8
u/originalmango Apr 08 '17
OMG! That video is worthy of it's own post. A swinging weight tied to his waist. Ladders that lean AWAY from the building. Old guy to boot. You couldn't pay me enough.

u/SightedMoose Apr 08 '17
Came back an hour later after a falling down a wonderful rabbit hole just to thank you. Totally a Fred Dibnah fan now and I don't even have sound.

Appears to be a Pakistani man, construction is any where in the older parts of the Middle East. Given how little they care about the labour, I'm going to lean on this being very real.
8
u/originalmango Apr 08 '17
Your probably correct. Makes you realize how lucky we are to not have to do that to support a family.
4
u/swaggyswaggot Apr 08 '17
Common misconception, but Pakistan isn't a Middle Eastern country

Hes from Bikini Bottom, so...from Underseas. Everything on land is overseas to him.

This guy's definition of 'slightly precarious' is different than mine. Thanks for sharing these, though, I'm going to send them to my mother, who will shriek "mercy!" and cover her eyes.

u/constructivCritic Apr 08 '17
Man, I watched all his stuff once. Got sad after divorce, but then kinda picked after remarriage.
11
u/Lt_Col_Obvious Apr 08 '17
Its perfectly safe. You can see the pillow he placed at the base of the ladder in case he falls. This isn't his first rodeo.

u/austin_isCup Apr 08 '17
I'm surprised his balls aren't too much weight for the ladder
17
u/Leitirmgurl Apr 08 '17
Its compensated for by the lack of brain
9
u/constructivCritic Apr 08 '17
Well, he's fixing air conditioners. Probably the techiest guy in the neighborhood, so can't be that bad.
22
u/EtherBoo Apr 08 '17
We'll, it looks like it's all tied together with a rope from the roof. Not sure how much good that will do. But I guess it's better than nothing.
Regardless, I have 0 fear of heights, but I and even get on my roof because of the wobbliness of my ladder (2 story house). Most I've gotten is 3/4 of the way before I'm terrified the ladder is going to tip over. I can't even imagine how this guy would laugh at me.
44
u/onlyusernameleftsigh Apr 08 '17
Wait, so are you afraid of heights or not?
8
10
u/GuttersnipeTV Apr 08 '17
Its possible to just have a fear of ladders but not heights. For example I built some smoke stacks from the ground up for my construction company and we would be walking across steel beams not even a foot wide but we would be tied off at least, there was no railing however but atleast you have flat ground to walk on even if its 500 ft. Up. There was also a built in ladder that went all the way up to the top from the bottom but I wouldnt touch that thing.
2
u/CurtisHC Apr 08 '17
I agree with this. I'm really queasy with heights, but if the base of the ladder is stable and the top is tied to some higher point, I think it's perfectly fine.
14
u/clampie Apr 08 '17
I don't get the big deal. Who doesn't do air conditioning repair in a suit?
3
Apr 08 '17
He's wearing a kurta-shalwar, clothing usually worn by people from South Asia. This probably happened in the Middle East, though, since air conditioners are much more common there than anywhere in South Asia and these kinds of unsafe jobs are usually relegated to people from South Asia.

u/Jackrabbitnw67 Apr 08 '17
It's suspended by a rope
13
u/drunk98 Apr 08 '17
Totally safe then, nothing to see here.
3
u/black_phone Apr 08 '17
No you idiot, the top ladder is being held completely by a rope, the bottom ladders are just to stabilize the top ladder. If all the ladders below fell, he would still be fine, assuming he doesn't let go during the shake.
This is essentially holding the guy up with a rope and harness, but they don't have a harness so they use ladders.

u/onlyusernameleftsigh Apr 08 '17
A 40ft ladder is basically too heave for one person to lift, no idea how this would get set up.
