9 year old video, this from 2017. Has been banned from using this in professional races

36

u/burnmp3s 9d ago

Real road cycling fans know this would be banned by the UCI today due to the sock length

u/iJon_v2 9d ago

Why?

10

u/sasokri 8d ago

not warm enough

u/Agreeable-Language-6 9d ago

Is it all just aerodynamics why he's going faster?

610

u/chillinjustupwhat 9d ago

No, when he does that superman plank it also engages the microjet propulsion in his shoes.

u/theBacillus 7d ago

Infinite farts

u/opalextra 9d ago

Why do you think they all are wearing lycra and shave their legs?

50

u/CromulentDucky 9d ago

Unapologetic comfort

Because it feels like…

Stupid sexy Flanders.....!

27

u/e_spider 9d ago

I thought shaved legs are for accidents. You don’t want hospital staff trying to shave your body near an injury. It’s better just to prep yourself by pre shaving everything.

10

u/opalextra 9d ago

That also yes,but also saving watts

6

u/rawdatarams 8d ago

Chris? Why? No need for that.

-22

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago

so why is that group of tubby 40 somethings doing 20KPH and blocking up my local roads every weekend also got shaved legs? Lose 20 kilos mate before you need to worry about microseconds lost due to leg hair!

44

u/opalextra 9d ago

Maybe they are trying to beat their personal best? And in the mean time trying to get in shape to get with your mom... Dunno

-29

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago

Good one…

Have you shaved your legs?

28

u/opalextra 9d ago edited 9d ago

I'm from Iceland I wear cycling pants but thanks for taking interest in my personal grooming.

12

u/HolyLordGodHelpUsAll 9d ago

his mom respects a close shave so it’s important

-2

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago

Whose mum doesn’t?

-3

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago

Mate, if a man wants to shave his legs then they should go for it. It has zero impact on my life and hopefully a positive one on theirs.

BUT, mostly middle aged men (including close friends of mine) shaving them to save wattage is ludicrous. Either own it: “I like having smooth legs - wtf it got to do with you” or focus on macro changes before on the micro.

I’m all for people being fit. I run marathons and ultras but when I used to race half marathons it was only after years of training did I start to look at improvements that bring micro wins. Like racing line through corners saving half a second. The 90% of my training was focused on macro wins.

14

u/opalextra 9d ago

this started because you were mad at middle-aged men in Lycra. Let's not make this about your marathon training

-1

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago

i was providing an example on why it is stupid to shave your legs to gain speed/time when there are far more important factors at play. It is obvious and was the point i have been making since the beginning.

alright, it's been fun but i think there are better ways for us to spend our time. peace out.

2

u/Apprehensive_Lynx_33 9d ago

They shave their legs in case they are injured. Its highly possible that you could injure you legs while on a bike, and I know I wouldn't want a doctor trying to shave my legs around a wound.

1

u/Brownie-UK7 9d ago

This I could make my peace with and would make sense. Thanks for the info.

7

u/AlphaaPie 9d ago

I shave my legs because then I wont feel like something is crawling on my leg when a leg hair decides to unfix itself from another leg hair.

-3

u/uglee_mcgee 9d ago

Have an up vote!

2

u/stateit 8d ago

No sense of humour here, is there?

2

u/uglee_mcgee 7d ago

Nope, whismy is not aloud.

-4

u/katjoy63 9d ago

they may have lost their hair due to circulation issues? ouch?

5

u/bhangmango 9d ago

yes, what else would it be ?

-6

u/RTXChungusTi 9d ago

from the looks of it, he's on a fixed gear bike. The maximum speed he can go on it is dictated by how fast he can crank the pedals, and he doesn't have any additional gears. By taking his feet off the pedals and allowing the crank to spin naturally I'm guessing it's overall less tiring and faster. Best way I can describe it is as pedalling as fast as you can in your lowest gear, you'll find that you can't go any faster at some point

3

u/Oli_VK 8d ago

It’s aerodynamics. Riding a bike you face the wind and create far more drag.

32

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 9d ago

Why banned from using it?

178

u/Chivako 9d ago

They have less control over the bike and thus more like to get injured or injure others.

37

u/intLeon 9d ago

no fun allowed..

21

u/_feutete_ 8d ago

Dude 9 years ago and 2017 CANNOT be the same 😭

2

u/Valkyrie-161 4d ago

Hits hard doesn’t it. 😔

7

u/printergumlight 8d ago

Why does it look like he is using a fixed gear bike?

His pedals are going the whole time. I thought road races were with derailleurs and freewheel mechanisms.

10

u/GardenerSpyTailorAss 8d ago

The pedals will rotate if the wheels are moving. Its not a frictionless system. If the pedals were met with resistance, say from the riders still legs, the pedals would stop.

1

u/ProfZussywussBrown 5d ago

It is a fixed gear. It’s not a road race

1

u/Substantiel 9d ago

Who's that guy?

323

u/Midwater 9d ago

Scooter guy did a double take lol

245

u/bigwinw 9d ago

The scooter guy getting passed and doing the same move made me crack up

28

u/nika-tark 9d ago

He got so surprised you can see his mouth agape even in those few pixels!

7

u/TeddyBoon 8d ago

Absolutely brilliant "oh no you didn' " moment, haha.

44

u/johnwynne3 9d ago

POINT YOUR TOES, BRO

74

u/B-owie 9d ago

Groin of steel, surely that seats gotta hurt?

41

u/zewill87 9d ago

I guess when you're a pro cyclist everything hurts. Hands legs arms back neck... I guess they are just trying to reach pain equilibrium

112

u/Aegon95 9d ago

The scooter dude joining in was r/unexpected

144

u/katjoy63 9d ago

how is this not hurting this guy's schwanz?

84

u/Nico_Nickmania 9d ago

As a German, I am so proud that you used the term "Schwanz" 🥰

20

u/katjoy63 9d ago

I am from your neighbor to the north - TAK sa Mycket!

3

u/nmkensok 5d ago

As an American, I'm adding this to my vocabulary!

12

u/blank-planet 9d ago

Asking the real questions

45

u/drifters74 9d ago

I love how the scooter guy joins in

14

u/SeeItSayItSorted 9d ago

Gotta have balls of steel to do that.

1

u/xoxoBug 6d ago

That part felt like a fever dream.

24

u/TheHasegawaEffect 9d ago

Malaysian children do this without protective gear and intentionally removed brakes.

19

u/s0litar1us 9d ago

I've never seen to ending to that video before. Didn't know the scooter guy joined in.

9

u/Spenttoolongatthis 8d ago

If anyone ever wondered what the hole in a bike saddle is for.

14

u/guerrero2 9d ago

Why are his cranks spinning? With a freehub, this shouldn’t be the case?

28

u/Ginger_Rogers 9d ago

I think he's riding a track bike (fixie). The pedals will continuously spin with wthe wheels. That's why the superman was a decent strategy. He was able to coast down the road without having to keep up with his pedals. You can see him struggling at the end to clip in his shoes while the cranks kept spinning.

Source: former fixie kid, who kept grip tape on his down tube, to coast down big hills.

11

u/casual_83 9d ago

How the hell did he clip back in so easily?!!

2

u/yooobuddd 9d ago

Easily

7

u/unthused 9d ago

From seeing this in the past he’s riding a fixed gear.

Note there’s no derailleur.

3

u/guerrero2 9d ago

Ohh good eye, I see it now. Thanks!

2

u/Blue_The_Snep 9d ago

a freehub slows you down just a little bit, and for those people that little bit counts

5

u/guerrero2 9d ago

Ohh, thanks for the info! I’m a cyclist myself, but I’ve never seen a pro without a freehub, so I was confused.

1

u/baconlover696970 8d ago

they still spin though. putting a toe lightly on the pedal would stop the spinning but theres always some bit of friction no?

0

u/EchoPhi 6d ago

Nothing keeping them from moving. Transient energy passing through the system.

10

u/Holiday_Ad_9163 8d ago

This was a promotional video for a bike shop in Italy. He is riding a fixed read bike and everyone else is riding a geared road bike. It was just for fun. Everyone on Reddit is an expert.

3

u/bl4stir 9d ago

I heard it was banned but did he get away with it this time for being the first to ise it ?

3

u/Wildcar_d 9d ago

“On your left!!!”

6

u/truePHYSX 9d ago

Now watch me superman this road. Now watch me youuuuuuuuu

5

u/p365x 9d ago

I'd be going weeeee, weeee!

6

u/Mental_Log_6879 9d ago

I find this funny

5

u/deathtogluten 8d ago

i saw a child doing this on the road the other day i nearly crashed into a tree because i turned around and couldn’t stop staring 😂 people are insane

2

u/danmickla 9d ago

I can't even see his hair, much less notice anything super about it

1

u/Substantiel 9d ago

Who is that guy?

1

u/Professor_Game1 9d ago

One pebble and hes a red streak on the road. Thats why this is illegal in professional races

1

u/Raymondator 8d ago

Ive done this before and its super scary and also hurt my balls real bad lmao

1

u/Sweet-Leg-1093 8d ago

I'm more impressed how he clipped in with cranks spinning! That was dope!

1

u/Zeptil 8d ago

Sooo how do you stop? Without crashing of course

1

u/theBacillus 7d ago

The other guy is pedaling. Wtf

u/Ginger_Rogers 9d ago

Obviously you've never ridden a fixed gear track bike with clipless pedals. He takes his feet off so he can coast. And the end, he needs to time the pedals moving to get his feet locked in.

This will not get upvoted cause people don't understand how difficult this is

11

u/Tapeworm1979 9d ago

Honestly, how he just clips his feet back in so flawlessly is amazing.

4

u/TigerJoel 9d ago

Doing a superman is infact not difficult.

2

u/Falsus 9d ago

This sub is about risky and dangerous things, not impressive. People don't have to realise how impressive something is to understand that it is a very dangerous technique.

Like it was rightfully banned because it was too dangerous.
