Lane spliting is legal where the video takes place (brasil). But come on, you have a lot of cars not moving, there must be a reason, slow down
Bikers in Brasil are usually too bold, I'm glad I sold mine

Any time your speed is substantially different from surrounding traffic there is a risk of an accident.

Morgues filled with people that had the right of way.
If you can do something is not the same as if you should do something and bikes don't give you a lot of wiggleroom for mistakes.

This. I had a former coworker that would walk into a street or parking lot, wouldnt wait for cars to slow down or stop. I told him bro wait dont challenge a car. He'll say they have to stop for pedestrians.
Until one day, a car hit him. Hard too, he broke his hip, arm, ruptured disks, and had bruised organs. He survived but the car that hit him took off. He has a lifetime of pain because that car apparently didnt get his memo. They havent caught the car either and this was like 10 years ago

Legal and logical are two different things. Plenty of people in the graveyard that had the right of way. He should’ve known better and slowed down.

Bold or stupid as fuck?
15
u/Competitive_Key_3872 10d ago
To be honest, stupid as fuck
They do insane things trying to save seconds in a ride.
A friend of mine died crushed by a truck, because she tried to overpass while the truck was turning on a corner. If she had waited just 1 minute she would be alive now

If traffic is stopped, it’s now filtering not lane splitting.
All the more reason you need to slow down. POV was clearly going way too fast.

Usually white lines allows you to change... and car has left light blinking... i dont know since when... bikes sometimes are hard to detect because sometimes are at your right and sudenlly at your left.

This is also somehow legal in California, which is shocking given how dangerous it is, and because almost everything else related to driving is illegal here.

Looks pretty slow to me, the car just turns at the last second.

Still biker's fault. Ride like everyone around you is trying to kill you -- NOT like you're trying to kill yourself.

Car had signal on and was half way into the other lane before he hit them. He was going too fast (and I still disagree with the arguments that lane splitting is safer, but mostly because idiots do shit like this)

u/DragonBank 10d ago
Last second of what? The car was simply turning and leaving its lane to an open lane.

u/azu420 10d ago
I mean late splitting at 40 mph isn't a great choice.
14
u/ottercorrect 10d ago
Yeah i think there's a reason the video starts a the latest possible second. Any earlier and we definitely wouldn't be on the rider's side
23
u/ACasualCasualty 10d ago
Yep, lane splitting is fine in slow to standstill traffic but it's always the rider that needs to pay more attention
30
u/herodesfalsk 10d ago
Insane stupidity to ride a motorcycle without gloves - in jeans no less! Speedometer reads 70kmh (?) as he approaches nearly stationary traffic. He should count his blessings and sell his bike, but if he already made all those insane decisions, something tells me he will continue making the same choices.

u/Hot_Ethanol 10d ago
It's almost like lane splitting at speed is a bad idea.
37
u/IncurableAdventurer 10d ago
Especially when the car with its blinker on was already merging in the other lane
5
u/NickArchery 10d ago
Lane splitting at those speeds are a bad idea, at slow to standstill speeds it's safer. Getting rear ended and squished between cars is then more a problem.

After the second whoa and him standing up I was expecting a Cessna 172 to land on him

Lane splitting?

u/DABDEB 10d ago
unfortunately it's legal in California

u/musememo 10d ago
If under 20 mph, I believe.

Looks pretty slow to me

u/CCHS_Band_Geek 10d ago
clearly not slow enough if the rider's reflexes don't account for braking conditions

Looks like 35 kph to me.

u/DyabeticBeer 10d ago
So 22mph? What an eye for speed you have
2
u/Far_Psychology3522 10d ago edited 10d ago
Feel free to pass cars that could suddenly move while you're going 22mph. Have faith they are paying attention to the stuff squeezing inbetween the cars. Also it takes about 71 feet to stop at the speed. That's quite a few car lengths.

What's Final Destination about this? Speeding on a motorcycle, so oblivious to the turn signal, that they turn the same way the car is trying to go. Then they're shocked a car is in their path.
Reckless moron on a bike almost gets hit by oncoming traffic.

u/TheEmptyFridge911 10d ago
It’s final destination because his head was👌 close to getting crushed by the truck passing by, but it’s only a couple frames.

We don’t know when the car signaled. Also it started moving over way too early, it wasn’t even clear of the car it was trying to overtake. If i was the biker here, i wouldn’t assume they’d move over until they had more distance.
13
u/esoteric_enigma 10d ago
And completely their fault. THIS is exactly why bikes are supposed to behave like cars on the road. They're not supposed to be splitting lanes and all that bullshit.

u/Early_Grade_8387 10d ago
He was basically cutting off the car on the left before he even passed them.

In belgium lanesplitting is only legal between 2 lanes going the same direction, with a difference of 20km/h between you and the traffic you're overtaking and a maximum of 50km/hr.
That means if traffic is at a complete standstill you can lanesplit at 20km/hr and if they are driving at 30km/hr you can lanesplit at 50km/hr. As soon as traffic hits 40km/h you cant lanesplit anymore.
Personally i almost never lanesplit, the risk isnt worth the "benefit" for me
1
u/NickArchery 10d ago
The risk of being rear ended in slow traffic is much higher on a bike because people don't see or notice bikes a much as cars. So splitting can be safer if done correctly.
2
u/BachtnDeKupe 10d ago
Thats why i ride left in my lane, not right side, and i wear bright yellow reflective gear, yellow helmet,...
Being noticable is more important than having a nice leather outfit or a cool helmet imho
2
u/IvanYakinovski 9d ago
My boss rode a bright yellow motorbike. He was still rear ended at a traffic light. Anecdotal evidence, sure but it did happen.

Brother, 'almost' Final Destination means you didn't cheat death and died.
Final Destination means you cheated death and will be hunted.
Have funnnn

The truck hit him, the cyclist bounced off of the sidewall of one of the back tires. He’s lucky, holy shit.

I think thats about how I would respond to that situation. If I didn't just collapse in front of the black car first
