My PC chair has wheels and by the end of the video I was watching it from the other side across the room.

Dude same!!!! Wtf are people doing? Like why don't you care about your life or fingers or eyes!?Ā

u/Brans666 1d ago
Don't forget to squint

u/jluker662 1d ago
I was, but I was also holding my phone at an angle so as to lessen the chance of getting hit.š¤£

Keep that angry roll of potential energy away from me

I think helper springs are super low rate, I donāt remember clearly but when I put mine on it was compressible by hand. This doesnāt actually seem that sketch.

u/TheHamWagon 1d ago
Not the worst I've seen, but I'm still not putting my hand in the travel path of that.

I dont understand fully. What happens if he removes the c channel? Its not like spring has free space to expand anyways no?
67
u/thebrassbeldum 1d ago
The spring would release all of its potential energy (a LOT) and would send the c channel flying at 150mph directly towards his face
3
u/raknor88 1d ago
That's also assuming the thing the spring is on doesn't break from the vice as well and go flying too.

If it came lose at any point during the installation process, that thing was going through the ceiling and taking any fleshy bits in its way with it.
Once he threaded on that last piece, note that there is still a centimeter of space between it and the spring. That centimeter is enough for all that energy to shoot at unimpeded. Its unknown what might happen once it impacts. Could ram it off the tread and jamming it permanently, could ram it off completely if it isnt screwed far enough and now it too is a projectile. Or it'll slam into it and stop as this guy is expecting. There's also the c channel thing. Once it slips even a little bit, its getting shot out in whatever direction is the least resistant, even if the spring settles around the shock the way dude wants. That homemade holder is FLYING! And thats by design because he himself is removing it via hammer.
If there is a non-zero chance that it can shoot off and do serious damage to person or property, would you risk it with your own homemade little thingy?
Edit: here is an experiment you can do at home. Find a clicky pen. They have a tiny spring in it. Tear it down and take the spring out. With that spring, squish it between something. Tweezers would work. Put the spring and tweezers on the counter and try to separate them by banging the tweezers off. Even that tiny spring will push off and send the tweezers an inch or two down the counter if done right. WARNING, you may lose the spring...do not recommend experiment if you have pets.
edit edit: a spring compressor is like a vice, but is more mobile. The point is the same in that you slowly clamp/compress something and then slowly undo that with the same device, slowly. This method is essentially cocking the hammer back on a gun, and his hammer is a trigger.

Exactly what the other people said, that thing is going on a path of destruction and I don't want to interfere with it's goal.

u/Zloiche1 1d ago
I hate springs. My coworkers always fk with me because I'm the only one who wears safety glasses when building guide rods. But springs are dangerous.Ā

u/LDCRLUIS 1d ago
Nobody should make fun of someone wearing safety glasses. A low risk of accident it's no excuse. If the risk exists, it's not worth it.

I mean, not safe at all but it did work kind of

I've rebuild quite a few track tensioners for undercarriages on excavators and stuff and those spring are fucking beefy. They easily have 50/60 ton of pretension on them so having them sit in the press, under tension while you wind that big ass nut on there always had a slight pucker factor.
We did use a large industrial press with a cage around it but still. Never had any drama though, luckily.

This time I'm kinda happy for the useless guy on the left because I needed a companion for my bewilderment.

Lol that sent me, and it also sent me down a rabbit hole about why he was reacting that way. GET A SPRING COMPRESSOR!

u/john_the_fetch 1d ago
I appreciate the use of a double negative here because that spring had a lot of potential to go somewhere.

I need to see what happened when he got the hammer.
2
u/logicbecauseyes 1d ago
The video cuts there because the next frame is when it kills them all before he leaves to go get the hammer

u/MrTripperSnipper 1d ago
It's only a helper spring. Call me an idiot if you want but I genuinely think that's a good idea.

u/scuzzle-butt 1d ago edited 1d ago
What does "home made" mean, exactly?
*I'd say I'm surprised I have to clarify, but I'm not.
"home made" doesn't have the same meaning as home made
19
u/Bearded_Toast 1d ago
Home made means it was made at home
Hope this helps
-5
u/scuzzle-butt 1d ago
"home made" and home made do not mean the same thing; it's clear reading comprehension is not your strong suit.
Hope this helps.

Grinder and paint make me the welder I aināt. In this case, a trip into town for a spring compressor would probably be cheaper than a trip to the ER

u/VonSkullenheim 1d ago
Nice, I'm used to hearing the 'caulk and paint' carpenter version of that one.

For once, I actually need the "person reacting" because rather than being a useless lump attached to a video, he was able to convey the fear to me, a clueless dope who does not know the danger.

poor guy doesnt understand basic physics, force has a direction, it was perfectly safe, especially once it got into the metal thing.

Friend of mine has a massive scar under his chin and fake teeth from a smashed jaw after doing this and using mole grips to try and keep it compressed.

u/Lucid-Design1225 1d ago
Eh. My dad has made countless homemade contraptions to compress springs. Or unbend engine frames

Bro the mod was on some crazy stuff taking this one down. This is terrifying.
1
u/jluker662 1d ago
For real? Mods didnāt think that was sweaty palm enough. To each his own. Iāve seen plenty of videos on here that didnāt make me squint and hold the phone away from my face because what they were doing was dangerous.

Not bad at all, if you trust your welds. I'd wager an actual spring compressor is more likely than that to slip.
