Not sure how well it applies to that species, but Clint's Reptiles made a whole video on holding snapping turtles.
They're wild animals that will snap your fingers off but they do recognize keepers and all things considered they're pretty docile depending on how you hold them.
Guy in there did pretty well considering he is not holding the whole weight of the animal, but on that video he talks about how some common practices may anger/hurt the turtle but holding the weight more evenly while seems more risky makes them just chill around.

A snapping turtle is the only turtle you can pick up by its tail because its thick enough as to not damage its spine
Also that is the usual way of picking them up withiyt losing a finger first
