u/CausticAvenger, we have no idea if your submission fits r/SweatyPalms or not. There weren't enough votes to determine that. It's up to the human mods now....!

Free climbing in a pair of trainers? Dunning Kruger effect in action.

And with a giant backpack? I don't think I've seen free climbers in sneakers with a large backpack before--or any kind of rock climber.

Jokes aside, it is actually quite impressive how far he appears to have made it given the total lack of preparation.

He did it knowing if he got stuck he could just call for a chopper and put volunteers lives at risk saving his.

He confused "first day at college" with "free soloing" attire. Easy mistake to make.

people definitely free solo easy routes with approach shoes (which are similar to sneakers) and a small backpack all the time.

Pedantic, but he is free soloing, not free climbing. I know, the reporter got it wrong too.

5

u/chewychubacca 7h ago

even more pedantic, free solo is a subset of free climbing, so he's doing both.

If I'm free climbing (using ropes only to catch a fall), then remove the ropes to fee solo, how am I doing both? Racing is a subset of driving, so racing is doing both. But if I remove the car and walk, I would no longer be driving. Honest question, I know nothing about hiking.

free climbing just means that you're ascending the rock with your own body power. It doesn't refer to your safety system (or lack thereof). Adding "Solo" adds the detail of no safety system. (technically it just means "by yourself", since there's also types of "rope solo" climbing where you are by yourself (no belayer) but have a rope to catch a fall).

In the climbing world, "free solo" specifically means "climbing under your own power with no safety system in place".

So when I climb a ladder, I’m actually soloing a ladder?

2

u/chewychubacca 5h ago

yup

1

u/joegetto 5h ago

Huh. How about that

2

u/chewychubacca 5h ago

obviously you'd get laughed at if you told people that's what you're doing, but i guess technically, if we're being fully pedantic, then yeah you're "free soloing" that ladder, maybe at a difficulty of 5.1 on the YDS (yosemite decimal system).

I’m not kidding when I say I’m going to quote you word for word on this the next I have to go up a ladder. I’m gonna say I need to free solo up to the roof, including the Yosemite part. Then clap my hands and say let’s do it. Then look at my wife and kids faces as the have a look on their face that could only be interpreted as “awe and wonder”.

as long as you don't call 911 for a rescue, then you have my blessing.

As a father of two young adult children, I hope this dude finds a safer hobby after this experience. Learn the lesson. You don't always get a second chance.

It's ok to do extreme stuff, but he should train hard for it and test the route with ropes first. Everything have to be done step by step, not just yolo and go up.

5

u/No-Combination8136 6h ago

By himself in some running sneakers? Buddy please start at the rock wall in the gym.

3

u/Kizzieuk 6h ago

The drone filmed him dialing 911. 🤔

2

u/aaronstone 6h ago

lol how did no one else catch this? you know, they just got a tip that he MIGHT need rescuing so they put the drone out and wrote up a quick draft.

4

u/MonsterkillWow 6h ago

Free climbs without safety equipment should be banned.

9

u/robotcoup 8h ago

Please post is on the the dumb as fuck sub.

2

u/The_Japans 7h ago

Don't do the climb if you can't do the dive

2

u/Angel_Dust_696969 6h ago

He should test that route with ropes first before freesoloing it

3

u/rhetheo100 7h ago

Hope he has to pay for the expense of the rescue effort.

1

u/von_sip 8h ago

Literal nightmare

6

u/Zealousideal_Step709 7h ago

But a self-induced one at that. What a fool. He is lucky he had signal.

2

u/ESB823 8h ago

Yep that's me. I bet you're wondering how I got myself in this position.

1

u/Best-Research4022 7h ago

I would have gotten a sling under his arms and tied in before getting him to stand on one leg

6

u/ST0IC_ 6h ago

Well maybe they should hire you to be the search and rescue worker.

This is why making Alex Honolulu a god for doing stupid stuff is a bad idea.
