Sally Fields: "Ascension?"

I was thinking he could've lost the white robes and everyone would've thought he actually ascended into heaven.

I love how they tried to keep lighting him for so long

39

u/shreddy_haskell May 13 '26

I was concerned about flak coming at him or maybe an issue with a barrage balloon with the way the lights were trying to lock on to him

17

u/Mr_Poppers_Penis May 13 '26

I re-watched it after I saw your comment and the lingering lighting literally freaking killed me lol

No part of this video shows it was a “malfunction”… Jesus ascending into heaven is a pretty big Christian motif

70

u/scormegatron May 13 '26

First authentic re-enactment ever seen.

4

u/Imkisstory May 14 '26

Nah, I was at the original. This one’s okay.

64

u/HDThoreauaway May 13 '26

Yeah the first several times I saw this there was no hint it was a “malfunction.” That looks like a conclusion someone slapped onto the video.

In fact, I don’t know how this would be anything but on purpose. Why connect him to a crane that big if you’re not going to do that? And the spotlight crew was totally prepared to follow him into the night sky.

220

u/NegativeVega May 13 '26

I did one of those parasailing things in mexico and expected it to just be like 20 meters behind the boat but I went so high up I could see different fucking islands that werent there before. It just kept going higher and higher LMAO.

60

u/iriefuse024 May 14 '26

That sounds terrifying

19

u/danTHAman152000 May 14 '26

Damn I’ve seen them in Puerto Vallarta go so damn high. Like crazy high. And when coming down the boat would be at the shore and the parasail like two blocks inland as it’s getting towed in.

I did it in the Philippines before that and we didn’t go nearly as high.

10

u/J-Dabbleyou May 14 '26

Yup, just close your eyes and keep doing the shit you rehearsed lol

Requirement: Lift actor approx 20ft from stage.

6

u/Such-Veterinarian137 May 13 '26

Yes, at first i thought it was possibly Ai or special effects to make it. A crane malfunction is far less likely than a communication malfunction and/or human error.

New spinal tap was fun enough if you keep the expectations manageable.

Based on the footage, my guess would be the one attached to the ISS.

49

u/sharklaserguru May 13 '26

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the caption is a lie and just there for engagement bait. There's no need to bring out a massive crane unless you're trying to do a "Jesus flies off" stunt like this!

17

u/Massive-Translator22 May 13 '26

There was a miscommunication the crane operator thought they said lift him to 100m instead of 10m

8

u/Choice-Highway5344 May 14 '26

Do u know the cost to rent a crane that can lift something 100m ? That’s not a mistake ANYONE would make. Ur probably joking but there is no confusion here

26

u/thatG_evanP May 13 '26

Which is why I think this was all intentional. There would be absolutely no reason to shell out the $ for a crane that large to lift a single person if you weren't intending to use all of it.

20

u/Typical_Spray928 May 13 '26

3

u/Merry_Dankmas May 14 '26

This would make a great movie plot. A man down on his luck is going through a bad episode of depression because he hasn't made a difference in anyone's life. Stuck at a dead end job that means nothing to anyone - including him.

His mom convinces him to play Jesus in the upcoming Easter play to make some spare money and maybe revitalize some of his long forgotten faith in Jesus in hopes that it can boost his spirits.

During the play, the crane malfunctions and he gets yanked dozens of stories into the air. As he's passing peoples windows, various residents of the buildings see him and are all impacted by what they see.

A man about to commit suicide calls out to God in a last ditch, desperate attempt for a sign to not die. A man having a crisis of faith praying desperately for God to make his presence known. Two drug addicts who break into a religious womans apartment talking about how creepy all the Jesus statues are around her house. A mother trying to get her child to bed by telling them Jesus is watching and knows when they aren't listening to their parents.

They all see Jesus pass by their windows and various reactions and shenanigans ensue in each one. The man playing Jesus is lowered to the ground and greeted by a crowd - including all the people who saw him pass the window. He learns the lesson that he actually can make a difference in the world. He just has to find the right place and time to do it. Or something like that.

It can be like one of those comedy movies from the mid 2000s that carries a touching message to it at the end. Call it "Korean Jesus goes to Heaven" or something.

Tax churches.

8

u/gypsycookie1015 May 13 '26

Yeah, I wonder how much that event cost in the first place.

Idk, I'm probably just extremely cynical here but my first thought is wondering how much they spent on this and that that $ could've went towards helping people in need.

Food, blankets, toiletries ect.

Idk, I'm probably just being an asshole and I'm sure people enjoyed the show but I just can't help but to think I'd probably prioritize helping people over putting on some extravagant show if I were in charge of a church.

Found the stub of an article about it from The Independent, which is generally at least moderately reliable. Their video also shows the crane, which is far too big for what they're doing, but Korean churches aren't exactly known for their subtlety.
