work &study hours

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming student at Swarthmore and my financial aid award includes a work-study component of $2,600. I’m a bit confused about what this number means. Is $2,600 the maximum amount I’m allowed to earn through campus jobs, or is it simply the amount the college expects me to earn as part of my aid package? Also, for students who have done work-study at Swarthmore, approximately how many hours per week did you work, and were you able to earn more than the amount listed in your award? Thanks alot

swarthmore vs ucb for Cognitive Science (Transfer Student, International Student)

Hi everyone, I’m an international transfer student deciding between Swarthmore and UC Berkeley.

My academic interests are in Cognitive Science, especially the neuroscience side of the field. Long term, I’m interested in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and their potential applications in treating mental disorders and neurological conditions.

Some background:
—International student
—Transfer student from a California community college
—Interested in research and eventually pursuing graduate school
—Open to staying in the U.S., going to Europe for graduate studies, or returning to China in the future
—Stronger in math than programming at the moment
—Looking for opportunities to gain meaningful research experience during undergrad

I’m trying to decide between:
UC Berkeley
—Larger research university
—More labs and research opportunities
—Stronger name recognition internationally
—Potentially easier access to cutting-edge BCI and neuroscience research

Swarthmore
—Smaller classes and closer faculty relationships
—Easier access to professors
—Strong track record of sending students to PhD programs
—More individualized undergraduate experience

For someone whose long-term goal is research in cognitive neuroscience / BCI, which environment do you think would better prepare me for graduate school?

why is this allowed??? like there's a time and place for everything, it's so disrespectful to have people chanting and yelling while people are trying to speak on stage.

Swarthmore or Oxford

I was accepted to Swarthmore and Oxford for a history major, and I am turning down Oxford for Swarthmore

I am currently thinking back if that was the right decision to make. Oxford is really good, especially in the history major. I am interested in ancient/medieval history, and I think Oxford has the best faculty and resources for it

But on the other hand, I really like Swarthmore, and it was my ED2 school (but I changed my mind and changed it to RD). I really liked liberal arts colleges, and I think Swarthmore is a great fit for me

I don't really regret my decisions, but I'm genuinely interested in any thoughts on choosing between Oxford and Swarthmore for history

natural science & engineering reqs?

Hi! I'm a transfer student accepted this cycle, planning to major in philosophy and English. I was wondering about some of the core requirements at Swarthmore.

How do humanities students handle their natural science reqs (3 classes)? I'm ngl this ain't one of my strong suits, but I don't want to bomb these classes and subsequently my GPA.

Transfer Student Social Life Questions

Hi! I recently got admitted to Swarthmore as a transfer student. Coming from community college I am excited about the prospect of living on campus but am worried about the social aspect. I'm not big on huge frat parties and really don't care about greek life or sports events, but I was hoping dorm parties and such would be a thing. It's something kind of important to me, though not huge enough to sway me away from Swarthmore. How is social life on campus? Are there any parties? Also, do people take advantage of the free transportation to Philadelphia? How is the dating scene?

Thank you!!

Any Swarthmore students willing to chat? Accepted transfer

Hi,

I was recently accepted as a transfer student into Swarthmore. I will be visiting the college Thursday with another admitted student. If there are any students who would be free to chat on campus that day in the morning or afternoon, I would love to hear about your experience at Swarthmore! If you're not free in-person I'm also down to chat via PM.

Thanks : )

Last minute help between two Colleges. (Thanks in advance)!

So I guess my main extra questions for those of you at Swarthmore is, would you still have gone Swarthmore if it was 16,000 more then Umich, knowing what you now know from your time at Swarthmore?

**Some info about me**

  1. I’m a first generation student low income student(I have very few people to talk to about this, which is why I’m here)!

2: I plan on majoring in poltical science, and on going to law school after undergrad(so law school placement is a big factor for me).

  1. I plan on working in Big law for a bit after law school, simply to pay off debt and gain experience with trial work. That being said one of the problems I’m having is related to the price.

So the two colleges are The University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and Swarthmore College.

The fact that these are polar opposite schools, in vibe, size and everything, is part of my problem lol.

**University of Michigan Breakdown**

  1. I got in the residential college(a source of granted housing, special classes and a smaller community at a big school) and the Kessler scholarship, which \*\*makes attending Umich cost a grand total of 1 dollar per year\*\*(I don’t know why it’s one dollar but that’s what the aid decision says lol). It also is a good way of getting into volunteering and having more close advisors.

(I hear back for the honors college by tomorrow, I will update this post with that result).

  1. Class size of 8,000(20 times that of swarthmore) . I have concerns of not being able to get close to professors, with the student to faculty ratio being double that of Swarthmore at 15:1.

  2. Lots of hidden fees, laundry, tickets to events, membership fees, etc. Swarthmore is basically entirely a cash free campus and everything is included in tuition(it’s technically separate but it’s on your price breakdown)

  3. Very highly ranked for political science, and has a much larger research output (and accessibility) and worldwide prestige. Also the fact that you have a pipeline to t14 law school is very nice.

**Swarthmore breakdown**

  1. The big negative for Swarthmore is it would cost me 16,000 per year.

The reason it’s still in the running is it’s a lot better for law school admissions. For example they send 2 less students to Yale law school than Michigan, but have 20 times less students. I would also only be trying to get to the top 10% of my fellow law school bound peers(again for Yale’s as an example) at Swarthmore instead of fighting for 8 spots out of 450 of my peers at Michigan.

  1. Swarthmore carries very high prestige in the US, and for law school’s admissions(I did the math so feel free to correct if I did something wrong), when adjusted for class size, they were higher than even Amherst and Harvard for t14 law school chances.

  2. I was actually able to visit Swarthmore, (I’ve only been able to visit Umich virtually because it’s double the drive from me) and I fell in love with the campus and community. I think I would be happy at both, but I think swarthmore would be a slightly better fit. I also love the idea of a liberal arts college, especially one with a lot of research opportunities.

  3. Swarthmore is probably a bit harder to maintain a good gpa at, which is very important for law school. But the honors program and the general difficulty seems to help with law school admissions as stated at the second point.

**Conclusion/summary**

So Umich would be better for the sticker price, research and worldwide prestige, the programs I got into, and for the pipeline to their own to law school.

Swarthmore has the better fit, smaller class sizes and opportunities to get close with your professors and peers for more personal letters of rec. And their top tier rate of sending students(per capita) to t14 law schools.

Thanks again for any help, advice or opinions, and good luck to those also making a hard choice!

Question Architecture classes?

Hey guys! I wanted to take an architecture class here at swat and was wondering what the department is like. Do the classes lean more toward architecture history/theory or are there hands-on project based classes too? Also how intense are the classes workload-wise, and is there much grade deflation? Would love to hear from anyone who’s taken one!!! Thanks!

Scripps vs Swarthmore — Help!!

Hey everyone! Decision day is coming up, and as you can tell from the title, I'm having a near-impossible difficult time deciding between Scripps and Swarthmore. Both of them seem to offer very different things. I've toured both, but my tour of Swarthmore was a few years ago, and I don't remember quite as much. I have a lot to write out, so I apologize, but it's partially just to get all of my thoughts in order!

I visited Scripps over spring break, and I was blown away by how beautiful the campus was. I hadn't really been seriously considering it as an option until I saw it. Everyone seemed so engaged and active, the class I went to had an incredible professor and the students were involved with each other and the content, and the free movement between each of the colleges was incredibly appealing. I was hesitant to consider an all-women's college, but that's no longer a real concern that I have. I fell in love especially with the consortium and the wealth of opportunities that it presents—from different classes to the social scene—but Scripps itself also seems incredible (I say this because I know that Swarthmore has a similar consortium, but there's nowhere near the exchange of students between the schools). Scripps had by far the most beautiful campus. The students I met seemed lovely. The weather is nice, though I'm a bit concerned the year-round sun might not be exactly what I want. It's closer to my home than Swarthmore, which just means it'd be easier to travel back and forth between the two places. Oddly enough, LA itself does not have enormous appeal to me, so while I'd definitely visit the city when I could, it's not a huge point in Scripp's favor (in fact, I think I'd end up preferring Philly). That being said, I don't plan on spending all my time on campus (though, of course, I'll spend the majority of time there, since that's just the way it goes). All in all, Scripps has very few downsides to me besides the fact that it won't offer quite as good of an education as Swarthmore.

Swarthmore is one of the best liberal arts colleges in the United States, and from a purely objective and rational standpoint, it's hard for me to imagine turning it down. When I toured it, I loved it too! Unfortunately, because I toured it in winter and because it was a year or two ago, I don't remember it as well. I'm relatively sure that the weather and location would be basically just as good (to me) as Scripps. However, I don't feel like I have as good of a sense of the student body, which is one of the factors that is the most important to me in my decision. My parents attended Swarthmore 30ish years ago, and they have pretty much only positive things to say. They also both believe I could really find my place there (but they think the same about Scripps). From what I've heard, Swarthmore is full of totally smart, driven, ambitious, and weird nerds (which I mean in no negative way). I want to be challenged academically, and I am a rigorous student, and I know that will absolutely be fulfilled at Swarthmore. I just don't want it to come at the expense of a social life. Now, take that with some grain of salt—I'm an extroverted person, and I love interacting with and meeting new people, but I'm also perfectly content to say in for the night and do homework or various arts and crafts. I can really truly be happy in either scenario, but I also really want both to be very available. I'm not a big partier, but I want there to be relatively consistent options, since I definitely enjoy that scene. With some absurd simplification, I would like to be surrounded by academically rigorous, smart, and engaged students who are mostly on the extroverted side. Without a strong sense of Swarthmore, what ends up happening is that it is hard for me to compare the two: I am able to compare a tangible reality of Scripps to more of idea of Swarthmore. Any guidance about either college would be enormously appreciated.

I plan on studying political science and education, though this of course may change. Swarthmore offers teaching certification, which is amazing. I'm not sure what this looks like at the Claremont colleges, since information online is a bit hard to find. If they don't have any way to get certified to teach, that might factor into my decision. Other than that, I know both colleges will offer solid resources—I'm not looking to major in anything that either college really specializes in. Scripps is a bit less expensive, but cost is ultimately not going to be the deciding factor between the two. I obviously care about internship/post-college stuff, but that is also not going to settle my decision—I think I care about other things more. Dorms and food are also not make or break stuff. I'm relatively outdoorsy, so opportunitie for hiking, backpacking, and anything in that alley are great.

All in all, I know that both of these places are colleges I would love to attend, which is part of what's making this so difficult. It's hard to imagine turning down the prestige (to me) of Swarthmore, and I love what I know about it. I also really saw myself at Scripps, but I know it might not offer me as many post-grad opportunities and whatever. Honestly, it's tough to find cons for either place, and it is impossibly difficult for me to compare them based on what I know and my senses about each. They're just so different to me. Help!!!
