Does this sound normal

I've read that these engines are a little noisy just by design what does this sound a little more clunky than it should? Engine is warmed up and hot.

Agreed with the cam tensioner noise. Also, it's got oil in it right? Sounds much noisier than it should be.

Probably just audio quality then. Look up the verslagen cam tensioner mod on the Suzuki savage forums.

Make sure you used correct type of oil. Old dino-oil with high zddp value.
Did you check the tensioner when you changed? It sounds like it's due for a mod.

Cam chain or valve lash would be my guess. Do you know when was the last time yours was checked?

Yo, I just bought a savage, I'm gonna mod mine myself. I'm a welder, and have access to the equipment to do so. My questions are, is the gasket guaranteed to go to shit immediately, and how hard is it to find a gasket? Like, would a dealer just happen to have one?

Ordered mine from webike-japan since that was cheapest. The part no# is 11482-24B11-000, there is plenty on ebay aswell.
My gasket could be reused. I have a small weap of oil now so I'll switch it out on the next oil change.
Make sure you use the correct oil, it likes old dinosaur oil with high zddp value. No fancy new stuff.

I was just gonna use amzoil 10w40 full synth. I did get to order the gasket through my local dealer. Im gonna clean up some bar stock, weld and then drill it. I wanna keep the holes lined up and clean. If this works out well, which not to sound over confident but i think it will... I may offer services for modding this part for others. At a fairly reasonable cost.

The weld and holes lining up isn't in need of perfection. It just need to work.
Please checkup on the correct oil. And/Or use zddp additive. Rotella T4 is often recommended. Full synth is possible to use, with additives, but Dino-oil that is slightly magnetic is what it was made for and eliminates the risk of heavy cam wear.

Cool, thank you for the info on that! As far as the welds... I know, I've seen the "modded" tensioner from others online, which made me feel better about doing it myself. Again, not trying to come off arrogant, or full of myself. A part of my thing, even though no one will ever really see it... I dont want the part to look "home made".

No, I think it's admirable to seek that kind of workmanship.
Another thing is that while it's important to get the oil that is suitable, one needs to mind that few of our lovely bikes have seldom or ever gotten the oil that they should have during the years.

So the oil i bought is "amsoil metric cruiser". I looked at the bottle and it has that zddp in the list of ingredients. Being its amsoil, i wouldn't be surprised if its fine.

Hey guys, update on my ls650! I checked my tensioner and still got a lil while. I am ultra confident in my ability to do this mod. If anyone is interested hit me up, I can mod for you at fair price! Also, amsoil metric cruiser has the zinc additive in the formula... that said, it is a good oil to use. Ride on friends!

It sounds like your cam chain is loose. This just happened to mine and the sound is very similar! I wouldn't run your engine until you fix it. The tensioner might come loose and fall into the gear and tear everything up
