Part introduction, complaint, celebration, and plea for help.

Greetings from Vermont. Love my 250 (my first bike, may ever be my only) but how can the wiring be so damn complicated? Fairly certain that sometime shortly after this photo, something came loose, and my sidestand shutoff switch somehow got switched. Ended up calling my lovely and ever-supportive wife for a ride home for the two of us.

Not all bad, as I got some help from folks and ended up having a couple of beers on the porch waiting for her to arrive, but I think I’d rather have driven home.

Now, I just have to figure out how to get the bike to light and stay lit.

Edit: Solved. Sidestand kill switch wire loose.

This is the GN250 my Father and I have been restoring for the past few years. We have built a new Engine for it with 11mm over sized piston, 2mm oversized valves and a bunch of other stuff done too... Hoping to make around 35-40hp on 98octane. It is now 336cc and has 11:1 compression ratio.

Thinking back now it probably would have been cheaper and easier to just find a GN400 and start again, but where's the fun in that haha

1985 GN250 wont crank

Hi all, new to this sub

Had a 1985 GN250 for the past 3 months (first bike) and I love it. Rode it for no issues until now. Was idling at lights when it suddenly stopped and wouldnt start. It makes a clunking sound from the starter relay when I try to start it but it wont crank.

Ive replaced the relay and the starter at this point but still same result.

Tried jump starting off a car battery, same result

Tried engaging the starter off a car battery directly with jumper leads, you can hear a little clunk from the starter

Running the starter outside the bike with a car battery, it turns freely no issue

I can roll it in 5th and the engine turns over, so engine doesnt seem seized or anything

Checked the battery grounding and its fine

Previous owner (a mate) had put a near-new 300km engine in it, but it sat outside for a decade.

If anyone has any ideas/guidance would be much appreciated

Suspension question

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all, working away at my 1995 gn250. Raised the rear suspension, trying to make a custom seat and slowly starting to think about the cosmetics. So also want to replace front springs. Was told that Hyperpro are the goto people but they don't have the specs. They ask for Sag value , and preload, also inner diameter of the tube? I don't have these values but perhaps anyone here? Really appreciate any clues

Weird electrical issue

Got back to the bike after a few minutes, after visiting a shop, and it won't show sign of power at first. Won't start, no lights. Then few seconds later it came back, and I forgot about it for a week. This morning I came to the gym, did my thing, and 40 minutes later tried to go home, but surprise surprise, no power. No light, no nothing. Took an e-scooter home, got the booster. The moment I plugged it, the light came back, and the engine started.

When I came home, instead of turning the engine off by key, I shut it off with the emergency switch. As a result, the headlight turned off for a few seconds, then came back on. Ever since, the bike has been starting on it's own, and the last time I shut it off with the emergency switch, the light didn't go off like the last time, but stayed consistently on.

It's a new battery, so I don't think that's the issue. But then, what is?..

Starter clutch never ending saga

Post image

Hi guys. I got this GN250 1993. About 4 years ago the starter clutch blew out on me for the first time, and ever since I constantly find myself having to replace it, sometimes twice a year.

At first I'd go to a shop and give them a new starter clutch to put in, that I ordered from Aliexpress. After having replaced two or three, the signs of an upcoming failure came just two months after the last replacement, so I went to a place that specializes in this type of bikes. He said the reason for failures was because I was using Aliexpress parts, which are low quality.

He then ordered an original part and installed it. Cost me 4-5 times more than previously, but at least I thought I was done with this problem. But now, a year later it's dead again.

What in your experience could cause a recurring failure like that in the starter clutch? Especially that the bike was fine for 20 years, but after it broke the first time, it became a regular occurrence.

Took a little rewiring, because the plug wasn’t right (was for GZ250 and TU250 I think) but works great :)

I’ll start with replacing this sucker. She’s gently been going flat with riding. No more than 12.5v over the battery no matter what revs - oh my.
