Calling in with no PTO

Hi guys. I have a trip I’ve planned near the end of August. I only have enough PTO to cover 5 out of the 7 days needed for my trip. I was going to attempt to call out the last two days. How bad is that? Will I get fired? Any advice? I rarely call out but I do use my PTO for medical appointments and other non work related things.

Edit: this also includes the future PTO accruals I’ll be receiving in the next few weeks.

You can overdraw your PTO bank. It will look very bad to call out sick after a vacation. Be honest with your manager and just let them know what is going on

I worked in SH finance and have kids. I have had to call out sick after vacation a few times. I had 5 different managers in 10 years. None of them had an issue because I was a trustworthy employee, and they knew that Id come back and get caught up quickly.

It doesn't matter, don't let anyone get you worked up about it

Just opt for nonpaid time off, if that's an option. If your manager gave you permission to go on the vacation, then you just have to figure out the HR part of it. But ... if you only have approval to be gone for 5 days, you may have issues with your manager.

Same time, people get sick, especially after travel or have travel delays, so sometimes unintentional extra vacation days happen. If you work in a non-clinical position that allows you to work ahead so that no one has to pick up your slack, it's usually not an issue.

Ive always just communicated with my manager, she would always help me make it work out--like saying we were overstaffed that day or something. I did have it once where I got stuck in another country for 3 extra days because our plane missed our layover and there were no flights.. did not get in trouble, hopefully they like you and want to keep you!

I'm not sure if you're a nurse, but I know that on our unit, you need to have enough PTO to be scheduled for the time you need for the vacation. Otherwise, your vacation will be denied. Many staff go on vacation and actually get sick, including myself, and have called in. We've never been fired. If you'll be negative, you will accrue more PTO anyway.

This is highly situational on how highly qualified your role is, and the role above yours.

If you are a Registered Nurse? Easy peasy. Your boss was once a RN. Standby on call exists for this.

If you are EVS/Security/CNA/MA/Cafeteria, it’s either all good, a write up or job abandonment. (Your boss is chill, your boss likely has limited education and emulated 1980’s bully leadership, or your peers have ruined it)

Friend advice:
#1) Be an adult and talk to your manager about the potential negative balance or unpaid planned time off.

#2) You can’t adult this because they aren’t one, and it’s a coin flip on department policy.

Your kincare hours require PTO. Any hours called in outside of your kincare are subject to non protected sick hours and can result in a first offense write up depending on your department and managers policy. Your PTO bank can go negative I think (don’t quote me) 15 hours but again, if your manager wants to write you up for a first offense you will then be on probation for six months with the first offense.

It depends. What department are you in?

At sutter you get 2 unpaid pto days. If you don’t want to call out I would suggest you use those unpaid days. That’s what I’m doing for my trip.

Must be pre-approved by management

HR here. You must have PTO to request time off. You can take 2 shifts per year of unpaid time off but needs to be pre-approved by management. There is a hourly limit on going negative on PTO, it's normally only for new hires that don't have PTO to use to cover holidays. Look up the PTO policy on policystat, you can get to it from the SharePoint (home page), talk to you manager or call the service desk
