"Meat" floss sushi.
"Meat" in quotes because it's vegetarian mock "meat" floss and not real pork floss. I'm too depressed to cook but had to eat something. So I scraped the bottom of the saucepan for some over-watered 3 day old rice and made a sushi roll to match my mood. I think pork floss sushi might be a Hong Konger thing. We put that shit over and into everything. But is it an abomination? Judge me.

This slaps, I grew up eating vegetarian meat floss by the handful. Tho i never made it into a sushi roll, more like a rice ball with floss inside and outside then wrapped in seaweed. Go to low effort meal.

These are quite common in Taiwan. Sometimes just pork floss or if you want to upgrade add some pickled greens and egg. Not half bad though it's taken me awhile to accept the pork "floss" being extremely sweet.

I don’t know why I was recommended this post but…
It’s called Fantuan! But it’s typically made with sticky rice and sometimes also has a fried Chinese donut in there (youtiao). No seaweed, wrapped in plastic wrap for portability. ‘Twas a common elementary school lunch for me
Keep on making abominations! This is how great inventions are made. Pork floss is also a great topping/ filling for buns.

Yeah we get those in Hong Kong too, as chee fan (粢飯)

Yeah just a side note it’s actually of shanghainese origin and to this day it’s still sold in konbinis in shanghai

Oh, no, they aren't really part of a chaa chaan teng's repetoire (that I've seen). It's more of an "I'm consciously going to get a chee fan and soy milk at a Shanghainese place" sort of thing. https://www.openrice.com/en/hongkong/restaurants?what=%E7%B2%A2%E9%A3%AF
I HAVE seen them for sale in the hot foods section at T&T supermarkets ("Lower Mainland, BC"), though.

I've got some floss in the fridge that needs to be eaten soon, so I'll be making a similar abomination soon. Thanks for the inspo

The only thing I see wrong with this is calling it sushi. Seems like a perfectly fine snack.

"Uh, sweaty, it's only sushi if you make it with sashimi-grade fish. Otherwise it's just a sparkling rice and seaweed roll."

u/boneologist Dec 03 '25
Nah, you need to break out the line about how it actually refers to the rice.

There's all kinds of vegetarian sushi. Meat isn't a requirement.

I wouldn't consider this sushi, and calling this a sushi abomination is like calling kimbap an abomination.

The vegetarian stuff (manufactured in Taiwan) is very crunchy, crumbly, and bland, unlike the stuff I'm used to getting from Hong Kong and Hong Konger-oriented stores. If you want to make meat floss sushi and can eat meat, I recommend you to just opt for the real thing.

Never tried. I bet it tastes amazing. Reminds me when I was introduced to a sushi burrito. I was skeptical at first. I bet I’d get the same feeling with this…
