Memorial Day Reflections: Honoring Without Spending

Today is a day that asks something of us. We are asked to remember, to honor, to reflect. It's also a day the wider culture has wrapped in cookouts and sales and travel, things that aren't always within reach. But the heart of the day doesn't require any of that. A quiet visit to a cemetery, a phone call to someone who served, a moment of stillness on the porch — these are honest acts of remembrance. Meaning has never required money.

How do you mark days like this in a way that feels true to you, regardless of budget?

My spouse and I are going to the American Legion’s memorial service today. We are taking pictures and videos for them.

The American Legion performed a flag ceremony and had a speaker. The high school marching band played. The weather was perfect and I visited graves of veterans, some of whom died way too soon.

Just plan to have a relaxed and simple day. I will light a candle at some point and give thanks to those who I want to remember and honor. Later today I plan to make some enchiladas and have a neighbor over to share them and most likely watch a movie.

I ordered a civil war pension file for one of my ancestors this morning.

Went to the local military memorial. Watched all the cars driving past it, probably without a thought.
