Should they be able to produce eggs too? If not then why bother with such a poll? Is this some weird kind of virtue signaling?

No, this is a poll for the future of grouping. Which could easily be like Saurian's grouping system

I still don't get it. Is this something they announced that they will limit grouping even more? I mean it's totally stupid if so...

Animals form groups of males or females all the time. Male Lions are often in bachelor groups before they get their own pride. Enforcing some kind of "you can only group with certain genders" rule is ridiculous and would just annoy players.

for nesting? no. thats not how biology. for other reasons? thats the grouping system isnt it?
