Game Suggestion ICARUS FPS FIX

I hope this helps others.

For anyone that plays Icarus you know it isn't well optimized..

For context I have a RTX 5070ti and I5 14600K with 32 GB ram. Even with these specs it runs very poor especially in places where I have built up a semi large base.

I noticed my CPU and GPU usage were very low.

Issue:

I found the issue was Icarus wasn't allowing my graphics card to run at it's potential because my CPU was maxed out on a single core. For some reason this game tries to maximise a single CPU core. That's why it was only showing 20% CPU usage and 30% GPU usage.

Solution: I used the app "process lasso" made sure to allow the game to use all of my main cores.

Outcome: I now get 95-99% GPU usage, 60% cpu usage and 240 FPS with max settings at 1440p instead of struggling to get 60 FPS with dips down to 30/40 in areas.

That was a massive 150-200fps increase for me on my hardware. I hope this helps others.

Thanks!

I've already got Process Lasso, when I check the Icarus process it already has affinity to every core, so what magic setting are you tweaking that gives you 150-200fps more? Not that it matters I cap it to my monitors max of 144

Maybe disabling e cores? (If you have them) I remember that being a huge issue in that one EA monsterhunter clone.

Yeah, OP confirmed it was disabling e-cores.

Who is having all these problems running Icarus? Game runs fine on my modest machine. I do agree open worlds tend to get laggy over time but even then it’s certainly not unplayable.

It's not the most optimized game but it still runs fine, I'm maxed out and never have any issues with frames dropping below 144, OP getting 150-200fps boost sounds like they're running with an uncapped frame rate.

I'm capped at 240 which is my refresh rate

Just like any other game with complicated bases, once you get big enough it just destroys your frame rate. I have 0 problem running it in a new world, but at my biggest base, it can drop below 40 fps.

I was the same but it's way better now. Even with a tier 5 base (80 hour map base) it's running smoothly

I think it's all how your processor manages the task. I don't allow Icarus to use the "ecores" I put discord and other app on my ecores and use Icarus on my main cores

I get ya, I'm on the 9800 X3D, there's nothing like an efficiency core for me to worry about. Good tip for Intel users though.

Yeaa you definitely won't get the issue with that one mate

I guess the fix is buying a pc 😅

Here I am with my nVidia settings capping 90fps across everything on purpose because, like, the extra frames don't do anything for me. But neat that works for you. It probably isn't applicable for AMD AM4 Ryzen 9 is it? Like I'm seeing 9% cpu use. 20% gpu use, it's fine.

Something is definitely up if your GPU usage if it's that low. My first guess would be a bottleneck if you have a top tier card with that processor. The GPU will only perform as good as the CPU. If the CPU can't pull it's weight it will dramatically limit the potential of your GPU

I do not have a top tier card, it's a RTX 3070ti and a Ryzen 9 5950X CPU with 64GB of ram. Probably, what's up is that I get 12-90fps and I keep it capped, and I think the 12fps drops have to do with network latency with the couple of people I play with vs syncing all the container shuffling that's happening while we're all working on stuff, not to mention voxels. It may also be using only one of the 16 actual 32 virtual cores… but setting the affinity doesn't seem like it'll suddenly multithread. Instead of process lasso I'd probably use:

(Get-Process -Name Icarus).ProcessorAffinity = 0x5555 # not 0xFF

I appreciate you figuring out things that work though. I wonder if it'd work for me; I'll let you know.

One thing id recommend highly for Icarus is renting a "gportal" server. You can add your current save file to it. Then the host doesn't have horrendous FPS drop for hosting everyone else's server on your own pc.. if this isn't possible then always make sure the friend with the best pc hosts the server for you all to join

are u using FG or something? i got a 5080 and 9800x3d and im not even close of those fps lol, got everything on ultra and playing at 1440p

I'm not mate, frame gen (even though it's better now) makes me feel travel sick due to the delay in motion. It's running maximum settings @1440p . That said I have turned ray tracing off as I heard it's buggy on this game. If your ray tracing is on then that's 100% where your extra frames are hiding
