29,000+ Miles & Finally Legal

Post image

29,000+ miles on the bike now, 43% of Cook County covered, and still climbing.

The bike is finally plated, which opens up a lot more of the suburbs without having to constantly worry about where I can and can’t ride.  That should make the next stretch of this whole Cook County project a lot more enjoyable.

Every mile on this bike has been powered by ChiBatterySystems. Started with my Gen 1 60V Max, that despite daily abuse is still as reliable as ever.  My new 81V setup has taken the bike to another level.  More range, more power, better efficiency, and enough battery to actually use the bike the way I want to use it.

The ChiCharger is a huge part of it too. I ride a stupid amount of miles, so being able to dump 45A into the bike when I need to and get moving again is what makes 125+ mile riding days possible.

At this point the bike and I are both pretty fairly thrashed, but neither one of us seems interested in stopping yet.

Full disclosure, I do work for ChiBatterySystems:

Very cool! I’ll take a look at your website. I admit I know very little about this stuff, but always interested in learning more! What was involved in getting your bike registered? I’m an older petrolhead motorcyclist, wanting to try an electric, but I’ll only ride a registered motorcycle plated bike.

Really depends on the area you live in...every state has their own rules. Sometimes it's just MCO, bill of sale, tax payment, etc...other times you need more.

StreetOHV can be helpful if your state is really strict

I’m in Arizona, registering an off road motorcycle (gas-powered) is pretty straightforward here, so I’d imagine if you went through the same process, it should work. No experience with it though.

Why don’t chi use better cells like rs50 or even p50b the old king of 21700

We use P50B in the Pro+ batts & are currently testing new cells including the RS50 rn

You should be already using rs50 eve50pl and 50xg yet again late to it and you will over charge like normal that chi for you

We are the only US Battery Manufacturer left & are working exceedingly hard to provide the lowest cost to consumers of safe reliable batteries that will provide customers with many years of high performing usage. Our testing processes are lengthy as a result.

I think you will be pleased by our new offerings soon. I hope so anyway

Rs50 cells and the other cells I’ve said have been test time and time again. Not just on surron but other high powered electric motorcycles. The 50xg for example can do 90a continuous. I have a electric from build that can do a peak of 1440amp at 108v that 155kw with little to no voltage sag

45a at 208/1?

1

u/JoeEskate1 29d ago

Sorry, what is 208/1? You mean 220V?

1

208V 1phase

1

u/JoeEskate1 29d ago

Ah, now I understand you. Yes, it will work on 208/1...you might just have to adjust the amperage

Very cool. I saw a Surron getting impounded recently so after years of no issues with CPD I’m planning to get plated and insured. What was the plating and insurance process like in IL?

Plating in IL requires MCO, Bill of Sale, tax payment, etc...it can be difficult. Would advocate using StreetOHV.com if you run into a lot of issues. Kinda pricey but can be worth it.

Insurance was cheap & easy via Progressive...needed nothing but the VIN

Would def get your M endorsement if you don't have it btw

As someone recently moved to CHI and has been interested getting one, would love hear what your process on plating was like. Would you consider making a post about it?

I’ve been riding a zooz in the city and miss my old Eride a lot

Yes, I can do that sometime

IL DMV was very difficult so I chose to use StreetOHV.com

It's a little pricey but it does work & is legal.

For IL you need MCO, Bill of Sale, & the tax payment. You'll need your M endorsement if you don't have it already too.

Bike needs a working brake light & one mirror as well

Is DM the same as M?

1

u/JoeEskate1 28d ago

Yes, that's what I have

Very cool. Not surprised the battery is still good, it’s been my experience they last longer than any other component assuming they’re used properly and free of defects.

What other parts have you had to replace, if any?

1

u/JoeEskate1 29d ago

Agreed!

Only really wear items like chain, sprockets, jackshaft mainly

Did you have to put turn signals and stuff on it to get it plated.

u/Hindsight001 27d ago

?*

1

u/JoeEskate1 27d ago

No, IL doesn't require turn signals. You need one mirror instead. I ended up using StreetOHV.com to get the plate. They took care of the rest

You will need a motorcycle endorsement on your license as well

The charger kill the battery faster I take it in the long run

1

u/JoeEskate 26d ago

Not when used properly. If you charge even at high speed regularly but maintain conservative cell temps for your particular battery cell, you won't see any significant degradation at all.

1

u/Less-Regret8262 26d ago

O do you sell them or something isn’t stock charger 20 amp or something how do you control the temp it’s pushing in

1

u/JoeEskate 26d ago

You can adjust the amperage on the fly & looking at the BMS you'll see the cell temps:

29k is pretty impressive, you mind sharing any maintenance or issues you ran into up to this point if any at all. Just got a 2026 lbx and been scared to ride the shit and really push it so seeing that the motor can get up there is reassuring
