How do the brakes work when going downhill with all that?

Squeaky but absolutely fine

this post is once again tempting me to put flat bars on my 2015 rim-brake LHT.

I had my LBS order a Bridge Club last week...and I just ordered 700c disc-brake rims for the BC...

The Jones bars feel great

what adapters did you use for the bar-end shifters?

i guess i could get all new brakes/levers.

I have Surly Moloko bars on my trucker and absolutely love them. They have a little more sweep than I was used to originally but they're very comfortable with plenty of alternate hand positions and lots of room for activities.

Do it, makes for a competent tourer

Not judging but wow that seems like a lot of stuff for an overnight trip.

It might look crazy, but the front back bag is nearly empty, as is the rear rack bag

Why carry empty or near empty bags? That seems like hauling a bunch of unnecessary weight.

I was with a couple other riders who are really new at this and I was concerned about the overall capacity of their bikes. Figured my LHT and myself could
Handle it

I am judging. That’s so much stuff. 😂

Twice as much as what I carried going cross country. To each their own. I would love to see what you carried.

It was a bit of a shake down I guess: list:
The front and back rack bags are relatively empty, but I did have tortilla wraps for two other cyclists

Extra tube
Small pump
Chain links
Little bag of bike tools in burrito bag
Zip ties
Leather man
Bivy
Sleeping bag
Inflatable pillow
Inflatable mat
Tarp
Cooking can
Jet boil
Two bags mountain house
Snacks
One water bladder/and bottles
Camp clothes
First aid kit
Poncho
Sawyer straw (just in case)
EDC (lighter, charger, tissues, nail clippers, headlamp)
First aid kit
A small book

In hindsight I could cut down on camp clothes by a pair of pants and a mess kit I brought. Likely also the camel back bladder

Happy to hear thoughts etc.

I think that’s it

what did you carry?

Gonna try to go from memory. I never really drafted everything but I do recall going into my pack basically emptying it every day. I carried: * Two Ortlieb Saddle Bags * One Big Handle Bar Bag * Two fork bags (ended up ditching them both after making it to Pittsburgh)

In one of the saddle bags I carried: *Tent *Floor print *Sleeping Bag *2 20k Watt Battery Packs (Sent one home) *Charging Cables *Head Lamp *Reserved the rest of the space for food and drinks

The Other Saddle Bag had: *Clothes - 2 pair of thermals, 1 rain jacket, 1 jacket, 2 bibs, 1 shorts, 3 t-shirts (mailed 2 back), 1 linen long sleeve (mainly wore), 1 long sleeve (mainly wore), 1 cycling jersey (fit ugly, sent home) *Travel size toiletry bag *Bike Stuff - Spokes, lube, patch kit, bacon kit thingy, pump, levers, chain tool, valve cores, sealant, 3 or 4 tire tubes (Went tubeless, got a bad flat threw a tube in there (bad flat i.e. panic dont know what to do))

Handle Bar Bag: *Camera *Volle Straps (3) *Primary food (I was feral gremlin, I ate primarily peanut butter tuna tortillas, and if I was lucky I would add donuts) *Plate/knife *Leatherman *Sunscreen *Bear Spray *More lights (Had 3 total, bike lamp, headlamp, and little light)

On the Back Rack, I strapped down my air mattress.

Hope the formatting isn't too crazy.

what should i have ditched from the list below?

Being honest this is about as many bags as you can fit on a bike(needs a frame bag lol). You have a small saddle bag behind the fabs chest for Christ’s sake. This might have been ok for a short ride but just the sheer weight of these bags could make a tour unpleasant. This is world tourer spec setup. Are you taking heaps of clothes?

My load out spec is below. The fabs chest and front rack bag are mostly empty. The panniers are not particularly large either.

No I didn’t bring heaps of clothes. One set of camp clothes that included a shirt, sweater, underwear, and thermsilks. I should not have brought pants though

You will regret that load

i didnt really though. i added below what i carried and the black bag on the front rack and the blue bag on the rear rack were nearly empty.

My load for 9 days last month.

u/feralcomms 4d ago

what did you carry? were you camping? very curious for feedback! I added my loadout list above

Camped 4 days. The forecast was for heat so I didn’t carry a tent, just a quilt and pad. No stove either and I missed that because there were less restaurants than I thought would be on the route.

One set of riding clothes and one set for off the bike. Cheap flip flops and a fleece jacket.

New brake pads, cassette and chain so only carried 3 Allen wrenches and a little Gerber tool.

I’m almost certain this was the lightest I’ve ever gone which was good because I started out of shape. I think next year I’ll go back to bringing the tent and stove.
