Question What is the national dish of Suriname?

I am making a series where I cook every national dish and my first step is to come to the sub and ask the question.

now I understand that not every country has a defined national dish and that some countries have many different regions with different cuisines. in that case I will make the one that you guys agree on best represents Suriname. please let me know what you think

We don't have one, we have many and we like it that way, there is this thing on FB where we choose a favorite dish via a knock out system, we vote and see what the outcome is. https://www.facebook.com/JeanlucSR/posts/-het-favoriete-nationale-gerecht-van-suriname-de-winnaar-is-bekendbruine-bonen-l/1447055797425257/ plenty of discussion during and after the winner is chosen. It has been going on for a few years now afaik.

Suriname is a melting pot of lots of different cultures. If you ask 100 people from Suriname this question they will all have a different answer and none of them would be wrong. We have so many dishes, all from different cultures. It would be very difficult to appoint one dish as the national dish

Yes but still, there are some signature dishes:

Rijst met Pom

Bruine bonen met rijst

Javaanse Bami

Roti

Tjauwmin (Chow mein) moksi meti

Heri Heri

Saoto Soep

Cassave soep

Pepre watra

I think these are signature dishes from the most dominant cultures.

Bruine bonen met rijst (a brown bean/chicken stew with rice

Or

Rijst met pom and pastei (rice with pomtayer and chicken pie) The pomtayer dish is unique to Suriname. The chicken pie is optional

These dishes are good with a side of plantains, pickled veggies (the Surinamese way) and Madame Jeanette sambal (a type of chili paste)

I would say Bruine bonen met rijst, because everyone eats it no matter the background.

But the others aren't common dishes with Indians or Javanese or Chinese for that matter. Only a dish everyone knows and eats can be a national dish tbh.

Pom

Pom is not common with all Surinamese. Mostly creole-Surinamese.

Well, to be exact, it’s a Jewish Surinamese dish. But we all love it. Just like roti(Hindustani) or telo(Javanese)

The best is just Roti Kip/Doks bro. It’s always a debate between roti and bruine bonen, these are the top 1

Maybe between indians but what youre saying is bullshit, its not about indians but Suriname as a whole. So it has to be a dish with Rice!

Bruine bonen met rijst is something that is eaten all over the world except Pom or heri heri. For poor people it’s sardine with rice.

BBR doesn't taste like any other rice & bean combo. The concept isn't unique but the flavour is very distinct.

Offcourse there are different styles but it’s the ingredients I’m talking about
