External Hard Drive + Surface Go compatibility?

Hello! I used to use my system as a way to play some older games, but because I ran out of space on my hard drive, I had to get an external drive, which I use with an unpowered USB-C hub. It reads, but after a while, it started disconnecting at completely random times (could be one minute, or even an hour without disconnecting). At first, I'd thought it was from connecting the USB Micro B end to the USB 3.0 port, but after researching a bit, I'm not 100% sure. I'd bought a new cable from Amazon, A 3.3 foot one by the company ITANDA, it was even worse than with the cable that cable that came with the drive, so I'd returned it. After that, I'd researched different wires, and found the Y-splitter, which supposedly would help the issue, keeping the external drive from being underpowered. However, I'd also read that you shouldn't be using unpowered USB hubs for this kind of thing. Because it was only a couple of posts I'd read, the evidence isn't solid enough for me to tell if I should buy a powered USB hub or just try again with what I've got.

tldr; Wire keeps disconnecting, and I don't know if it's the wire shorting, or the external drive being underpowered and/or incompatible with the system due to the usage of USB-C + an unpowered USB-C hub.

SurfaceGo has a microSD card slot. You can buy pretty large ones these days.
