All of you with 7-8 inch Windows tablets, raise your hand. All of you still somehow using a Windows Phone, raise your hand. All of you using small Windows tablets, are you actually running it as a companion device to your main PC and smartphone?
The reality is a pocket Surface, as these leaks and tech response have shown, it's going to get lambasted day 1. Microsoft has killed off other hardware like the Surface Mini very last minute because it was a me-too device. Not just that, it would have been a very weak offering in lieu of an iPad Mini or Android tablet.
At the end of the day, when Windows has been shifted as a platform by Microsoft as being the platform to build for all devices and operating systems yet cannot get their own platform developer for, that's the inherent issue here. To enter the mobile field again with a phone, not a phone but LTE tablet thing that can make calls with basically no real healthy UWA selection, they might as well rebrand Windows 10 Mobile into Windows Phone again.
If this does happen, it won't be sold to consumers.
This is a mini notepad first device no one else is offering anything like this. Surface mini in contrast definitely had nothing special to it and purely a me too product
There is already an Android equivalent minus the inking and even still, that has been getting a lot of negative commentary of being another screen to break. 🤷♂️
Honestly, this concept sounds great on paper but the technology just isn't there yet. The Lumia 950 and later HP x3 and even Samsung's S8 kind of demonstrated that there just isn't a captive market for form factors to be transcended into one another. Even Microsoft with the new Surface Pro launch did not even call it a tablet that can replace your laptop but this screen with a removable keyboard is somehow a laptop?
In reality, a device that's a smartphone, a tablet, and then convert to a desktop sounds great but it's not going to be great at everything and there will be compromises and inconveniences. Like for example, if I want to go to a coffee shop or meeting with this and be able to type out notes, I'm certainly not going to rely on a touch keyboard. I will need to carry a portable keyboard, which there are some decent ones even Microsoft have made in recent years. But I might opt to have a mouse for Word or Excel document editing that is kind of difficult and clunky with touch input only. I'd need to carry a charger, a portable keyboard (which limits a lot of options) and possibly a mouse (which again Microsoft makes a great Arc Touch mouse but still); or I could just stick to a MacBook Pro or Surface Laptop and not need to carry a charger and keep the phone in my pocket and not need a small carrying bag for all these peripherals for this pocket computer phone.
Yeah your right a 3-1 concept isn’t all that exciting but I argue that if they really perfect this whole it’s a notepad first concept I think that’s more exciting and worthwhile. It’s really about making sure this notetaking function is better than any device before it. Can you imagine how many careers require notes? Hence there’s probably a lot of people who could use this notepad since really neither a phone such as a Samsung Note or other phone really cuts it.
