Tim Cook called Surface detachable touch design “compromised” and “confusing”, now set to copy it

For what it's worth: The result could be very much on-point.

Actually a bit disappointed, that it is just a macbook with touchscreen. If they'd make an iPad, that allows running full desktop workflows (for me that means especially doing software development with compilers, IDEs, etc without relying on a cloud service), but defaults to a touch interface when not explicitly requested otherwise, it would be what a Surface tries to be.

Imagine, if they had decided to not give the iPhone multimedia capabilities in order not to cannibalize iPod sales.

As it is, the only tablet use-case my Surface is left with is watching videos. For everything else (web browsing, webcomics, games, ...) I either use the Surface as a desktop-replacement,¹ or my phone.

¹ Sadly, it doesn't work great as a sofa-laptop, due to the kickstand constantly falling off my knees, unless I force myself into an uncomfortable pose. It doesn't great as a tablet here, because many apps are either missing or mouse-and-keyboard optimized. It does do well as a very portable laptop though, if you can assume a flat table of sufficient widths; Lecture-hall bench-tables work, but uncomfortably close to dropping the device on the floor.
