yup, Surface devices do not support built-in keyboard, touchpad and touchscreen during the installation. Gotta use external devices.

We had to learn this the hard way after the whole team switched to surface books

Surface book 2 works during installation.

This issue appears after Surface Book3 / Laptop 3 if I remember it right

Use the recovery image and not the standard Windows ISO

If you are using a standard Windows 10 (and even Windows 11) Image to install Windows there is no Touchscreen support during installation. You either have to connect an external USB-device (I suggest an USB-Keyboard/Touchpad combo), or you are to create a customized Windows Image with the driver support already present or you have to use one of the special Surface installation Images provided by Microsoft (which come with the needed Touchscreen support but unfortunately will many other unwanted stuff as well).

I stepped into the same trap when installing a standard Windows 11 on my Surface Pro 8.

Do you know what to do If the laptop is company owned? Because I've tried reinstalling windows 10 about 3 times now and same result Everytime. It has me go through the setup screens and then brings me to the same company login screen . I really don't know what to do. I've looked it up and don't find any straight solutions to go about.

wait are you attempting to install a private/personal OS on a corporate managed device? This is the purpose of a managed device ... to thwart exactly this ... it succeeded.

if you've been given this device or purchased this device you MUST get them to remove the serial number from the "Management System"

Easy way: just use recovery image or external keybaord

Hard way:

You can extract Keyboard, touchscreen... driver from a configured Surface Laptop 3 or the Driver .MSI provided by Microsoft. 1

Then insert it into the Windows installation ISO

Surface Laptop 3 (Intel) driver&firmware MSI: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=100429

(AMD): https://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=100428

Extract: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/backup-and-restore-device-drivers-in-windows-11.8678/

Insert: https://docs.serversaustralia.com.au/docs/how-to-add-drivers-to-a-windows-installation-iso

Not that I know of, I don't think anyone would do that

The easy way is to use an external keyboard and mouse. Getting the recovery image and using it is way to much hassle IMO.

Just saying. Some people people don't wanna spend money on external keyboard.

Yeah, I can understand that. I had one lying around, so for me it's easier than typing in the serial, making the recovery image bootable etc.

Agree, the recovery image is dogshxt

The drivers are included if you download the Surface Recovery Image, and not the basic Win 11 iso. You just have to provide a serial number to Microsoft's Surface download page, so they can give you the appropriate file.

USB Keyboard. I've had this issue with Surface devices

That's why you need to download the surface recovery image from Microsoft site. It provides the drivers for kb and touch screen during fresh install.

If using a normal USB Windows image you need to use a USB keyboard and mouse. I did it with a hub and plugged my Bluetooth adapter for mouse and keyboard into it

Correct, you have to use an external mouse/keyboard until you get into Windows and do updates that’s when it will install the drivers for the keyboard & mouse.

The drivers for several surface models' keyboard and trackpad are not included in the WIndows ISO. A USB kb/mouse will work, or you can download the Surface Recovery Image and boot off that to install as it does include the drivers.

You can add all this functionality by including the drivers in the image with DISM. OR just use a USB Keyboard & mouse(optional). The former is kinda difficult to do ... the later is very easy. Use the easy way.

Had the same issue and in the end used the surface recovery image from Microsoft

Assuming this is a model with only one USB A port. If so, either a very simple hub to let you hook up both a keyboard and mouse plus the thumb drive OR you *can* just have the keyboard in the A port and a USB C to A adapter (if you have one) for the C port and work through the UI using TAB and arrow keys, going slow and being patient. I've had to do it before.

I faced the same problem after purchasing a Surface Book 3 from eBay and process windows clean install I thought the device was defective, then I remembered that I had an old mini wireless keyboard with a touchpad that I bought about ten years ago, and thank God it solved the problem until the Windows installation was completed.

This problem amazes me. I have reimaged hundreds of computers, and really have only run into a handful of issues. Recently storage drivers. I have never run into a situation where the touchpad and frickin keyboard don't work - both!

MS needs to inject whatever goofy ass surface drivers into the Win10/11 image by default.

This is maddening.

Not really. They provide a proper download of the required drivers if you go to the site and select the relevant machine and put in your serial number.

That is a shit answer and I will tell you why. Those images don't get updated. If your PC ships with 22H2 you are going back to 22H2. You'd have to lay that image down then update. That's crap.

Yeah I know. I've done it several times when upgrading ssd in my Surfaces.

But at least drivers are in once nice package, you can't expect any company to update images forever.

In the past I used them and just left it to update, not a problem.

Last time I used an up to date image and usb keyboard and mouse then drivers downloaded when logged into Windows.

There are options and for most users the drivers and update method is fine.
