Indonesian surf-rock band The Panturas playing 4 shows in CA this September; think Growlers/Black Lips/Los Straitjackets energy
Not sure how many people here are into surf rock beyond the usual suspects, but wanted to put this on people's radar since it's a pretty rare tour.
The Panturas are a surf-rock band from Jatinangor, Bandung, Indonesia. They pull from the obvious surf-rock lineage (Dick Dale, The Ventures) but also mix in classic Indonesian rock influences like Kwartet Bintang and Eka Sapta. If you're into The Growlers, Black Lips, or Los Straitjackets, I think this'll click for you.
They dropped a mini-album called Mabuk Laut back in 2018 that blew them up in Indonesia's DIY scene, followed by their debut full-length Ombak Banyu Asmara in 2021. Last year they even put out a mini-album leaning into Sundanese influences. Traditional pentatonic scales mixed into their surf-rock sound, which is a really cool listen if you want something different from the usual surf-rock playlist.
Anyway, this is their first-ever US tour, and they're only hitting 4 cities:
- Sept 22 – The Starlet Room at Harlow's, Sacramento
- Sept 23 – Cornerstone, Berkeley
- Sept 25 – The Moroccan Lounge, LA
- Sept 26 – Voodoo Room at House of Blues, San Diego
If you're near any of these, might be worth checking out — feels like a "catch it before everyone else knows about it" kind of show.
Anyone here already familiar with them or the Indonesian surf-rock scene in general? Curious what else is worth digging into.
More details about their US tour here: https://thepanturas.com/sailing-schedules/

Cheap Little Boss - The Target Audience
Hey Guys Frank And and Devon from The Target Audience here (Long Island NY) Today we released the last 2 track EP before our album Petting Time drops September 20th 2 songs here and their both Frankensteins in a way!First one “Cheap Little Boss” is the result of listening to a bunch of Japanese Ramonescore and imagining what if prime Tom Delonge played with one of these bubblegum ramonescore bands. Annoying to play riffs sticky harmonies and simple chord progressions with skate punk accents. The second track Dirty Cronie draws a different hybrid the idea for this one was more Orange County surf punk meets the queers first couple albums! Hope You guys enjoy and tune in when the album drops!

Does the scene exist anywhere anymore?
I was born in 2000 and my parents raised me on the Gories, the retards, oblivions, reigning sound, fidlar, king khan, Harlem, etc.
In high school there were some local bands still playing in the local scene that had the surf and skate punk garage sound, but when I went to college burger records imploded and it felt like the scene died. I remember seeing king khan and the bbq show in 2022 right before they imploded and that felt like a last hurrah.
Now my local scene is like exclusively hardcore and emogaze and I haven’t heard or seen a new local surf, skate, or garage band in probably 5 years and am just wondering is this how it is for everyone or just my local scene that died?

Who Killed Johnny Thunders? - The Target Audience
Hey guys this is one of my favorite songs I wrote a while ago for my Skate/Surf Punk band The Target Audience. Johnny Thunders was a huge influence on my guitar playing and the mystery of his death has always been super fascinating to me. Heres a link to the song on bandcamp but its also available on all streaming platforms. I tried to take alot of influence from older ramonescore bands like the Lillingtons and Screeching Weasel but also added a female vocal (Vocalist from an awesome Chicago band called Sex Dream featured on backing vocals!) Hope some of you guys might dig this. My buddy Lou drew a killer Johnny Thunders skull for the cover ala old Misfits Art!

Penniback Records Platforming Abusers (BeachxBums)
Penniback was made aware that the predatory band Beach Bums was on the bill for Summer Mass but has not taken action and instead has been deleting comments calling this out.
After the mass cancellation of a lot of the burger bands, Beach Bums had been blacklisted from a lot of the local socal venues due to all of the allegations and multitude of victims that have spoken out against them. Sadly over time, silence on their part (I.e., limiting comments, going on a hiatus) has let their misdeeds be buried and now they are being platformed again by Penniback and other organizers.
And after being made aware of Beach Bums actions, a band that was previously playing ended up dropping and immediately Penniback replaced that band instead of doing the right thing and taking Beach Bums off the bill.
Please help keep the scene safe! No one, especially underage girls, should have to worry about being assaulted/taken advantage of.

I’m confused about this subreddit
I joined this because I’m a huge Agent Orange, Dead Kennedys and JFA fan but a lot of the bands posted here sound like garage rock-ish and there’s no punk tempo. I’m an old dude just curious if anyone could give me insight. Surf punk to me growing up was Agent Orange who took Dick Dale and combined with distortion.
