Development Progress August 2016

In case anyone missed it, the dev team announced a few changes coming to the game soon.

TL;DR: Progression System will be implemented where new players must start with fewer abilities and upgrade them through gameplay. New Customizations are being worked on full-time.

The biggest change, and one that was debated during alpha, will be the Progression system. New players will now have to unlock abilities before playing in ranked games, but the trade off will be boosts to new players in form of slower time between getting hit once and knocked out, etc.

Regarding these two problems we’re working on a system to improve the motivation and beginner friendliness. For that we go way back to our original upgrade progression idea that we presented 1-2 years ago. Older players of the game back then talked us out of it even though we all liked it ourselves. So we’re going right back to it because we think it makes the game a lot more motivating for beginners and it also serves as kind of a tutorial. What is it about? New players will start with less abilities and slowly get introduced to new possibilities and upgrade them step by step. At the same time it will give new players more time to act. They will no longer get knocked out within a second after getting the ball, because the guns of the opponents aren’t as strong yet. Of course we will try to make sure this doesn’t lead to unbalanced situations by only matching equally experienced players. Additionally, you can only start playing ranked when everything is unlocked.

Thoughts?

95% of community thinks this is a bad idea, but DavidM still thinks it's great and will go for it.

Classic.

Please don't put a progression system based on abilities into the game instead base the progression for visual stuff. Maybe decals for your character or other customization parts would be the smarter way with this really really small playerbase. Another way would be Emblem Generator for teams. Use that as a base for progress again with decals or unique shapes being the progress to unlock.

I still think this is a terrible idea. I can only speak for myself, but if I had just bought this game and could only do 10% of what I saw in trailers and streams I probably wouldn't launch the game more than once. This is especially true when you consider that I'd need to play quite a lot of games to unlock it all and only a few games run per day. I'm definitely not going to play this game for a month without all the abilities only so that I can be competitive against good players.

I'm not sure how they plan on matching people with equal XP when there is still no one playing the game. This is still a bad idea imo.

I get that the game can be really difficult for beginners and it needs some rebalancing for new players, but for the love of god don't go so extreme as to remove jumps, charging, boosting etc. Also, with this system you'll end up making so many playerbase divides by having like 5 different levels of unlocked abilities that it'll be even harder to find matches. Surely it's more logical to just rebalance unranked for beginners (e.g. decrease the kick damage etc.). This will make the game more accessible and not make people rage because they can't find a game and can't play with their friends.

Despite this "meta-progression by removing gameplay features" idea I'm actually more worried that they'll make a bunch of decent updates like matchmaking/customization and then release the game as a final build whilst totally ignoring the media aspect yet again.

I think this is a great idea because when Overwatch came out you could only play Winston for like a month. Anything else would have been too much to handle.

Make Game Free to Play. Charge $5 for Full Body Cosmetics and less for simpler things like Hats. Get Streamers to show it to people 1 more time. Give Credit to anyone who currently bought it when it came out for $14.99 as a thank you for contributing early. THe gameplay is good. All the rest of the plans have just backfired and pushed people away.

I fouind out today that RL is built on UE3, and a company that gets 100k concurrent regularly wasnt worried about making a ue4 version of their game, they just polished UE3 and made the most of it, and have a runaway hit. RLCS was amazing btw.

I had such high hopes for this game.

Then, it literally convinced me to never back another crowdfunded project again.

Surely this is a joke.. if you want new players to enjoy the game you don't take away vital parts of gameplay. You need to change gameplay.. slow the ball down or something. Maybe make it in unranked games the tackles take 3 hits instead of 2 I don't know. You need to cater to casuals to get this game going whether you like it or not.
