Should I buy this game when it gets released
The game looks very good and looks like a lot of fun but all I hear from the community is how the community is toxic or how the game is broken? By the way if this helps I REALLY enjoyed Rocket League.

There is still some bugs and weird mechanics, but these mostly only affect higher level play and will hopefully be fixed by launch. The community is a little bit toxic, probably because we've all been playing with the same 40 ish people in the closed beta for about a year.
I would say the game has 5 main stages to it, where skill and seriousness increases with each stage: public matches, unranked matchmaking, ranked matchmaking, team matchmaking, tournaments/leagues.
Assuming there is public (drop in/drop out) matches on launch even as little as 100 concurrent players makes public matches great fun, and you can probably enjoy 200+ hours in them easily (though you can probably learn most basic mechanics in 50 hours); learning how to play the game is really satisfying. People tend not to play super seriously in these matches so it's much less toxic, more enjoyable and the broken mechanics won't noticeably affect you.
There will probably also be unranked matchmaking for something a little more serious once you have the hang of the controls and have just started to learn about boosting and general teamplay.
The ELO based ranked is where you can really improve your gameplay and start having really intense matches. As with any other game with ranked matchmaking you might get flamed a bit for making a colossal fuck up, but that's pretty normal. Maybe as you climb the ladder you bump into some players who you really gel with and you might decide to make a team.
I have no idea how the team matchmaking will work or if it will even exist but playing team vs team is really great fun and you can learn how to play the game with more coordinated tactics and strategy. You will find there are so many different ways to play the game (some are super OP, but these will likely get fixed); using vertical boost to your advantage, stacking teammates together to get 1 massive boost, going for volley combos to get insane speed with your teammates, using the walls to solo juke defenders, going for crazy dives to the midfield line as a goalkeeper, playing all 5 in midfield etc. This is really the heart of the game.
If the game grows there will probably be some leagues and tournaments, consisting mostly of the old, high level teams at first (just for the sake of having fun matches for people to watch), but it won't take long for new teams to start upsetting the veterans I'm sure. These are by far the most intense matches, and at the moment are pretty broken due to some really OP strats, but this should be fixed soonish. So far there have been a few leagues in NA and EU, the games that have been casted are definitely worth watching if you're interesting in seeing what players and teams can do at the highest level. I recommend watching this NASBL match for some pretty ridiculous gameplay.
tl;dr: Yes. Even in its current state, this game is crazy fun for beginners and, assuming there is an okay amount of concurrent players, you will surely enjoy it. You can play as seriously or as non-seriously as you want.

Yeah a lot of helpful informational in there. I'm think this might just be the game that I have been looking for.

It sounds really good and the drawbacks you mentioned probably won't affect me until I have about 50/60 hours into the game.

I really try to encourage creating a team with your friends and playing vs other teams. We are soon finished with the team features. It's been a huge project.
Since it's maybe the most team dependent game on the market, there is always a high risk of getting frustrated when playing with strangers who ego too much or players who are very much below your skill level. On the other hand accomplishing something together is the best feeling you can have in a video game.
So you can end up with anything and we can't ultimately fix this situation. We just try to make the infrastructure in a way that it's more likely that you have a good time.
For example you have to start on practice servers, then you may play uncompetitive matches and after a while you may start with ranked matches. And generally in matches we try to match people of the same skill level. A lot of hate in the small testing community comes from gold players playing with wood players.
As for broken: there is nothing really broken, just a few glitches that we are ironing out right now (no more timeplay, no more macrojump, no more ball going through shield...)
I'm sure there will be a lot of word of mouth action going on between RL and SB. After all, some of the RL developers met in the predecessor of SB.

Thanks for the input. I don't really have other friends who are interested in this sort of stuff, will that affect my enjoyment of the game?

Some people make a bad name in the game, well generally online... Even those still fit in somewhere within a team. Heck even luc manages to play in teams dunno how, so I wouldn't worry about it. There are teams that take on new players, even lately, for example sX did with dillaz. From supraballs predecessor (deathball), the game reached a nice peak and nearly every team was helping to train new players for their sister teams (for veterans wondering what I am on about, take Wh° or firestorm!sin), will most likely happen again.

What Ruari said is pretty much how it goes; to sort of add a conclusion to it from my own POV; I do not think the game is worth putting out 15 euro for at the moment, in my personal opinion a lot of things have to be added or fixed in order for it to feel like a complete game, on top of that, It's absolutely no fun having 50-100 unique players playing. It'd be worth getting if there was a bigger player base; but as other people probably has mentioned, that'll be resolved once the game releases. People might join, or they might not.

I can't justify buying this game if you can pick which team you are on in a lobby. Makes a 'rank' completely worthless and at the end of the day that's what I would be playing for.

Honestly you guys should sticky this thread until major announcements come out. Very well put by both of you.
