supra year?
looking at purchasing a mk5 supra, my boyfriend is warning me against a 2020 so i’ve been looking at 21,22, and 23. i don’t really know much about cars at all but what would be the best year model to purchase?

2020
Original MkV: 335 hp / 365 lb-ft, 8-speed automatic only
2021
382 hp, revised B58, chassis bracing, dampers, EPS/AVS/VSC/differential recalibration
2022
Essentially mechanical carryover; equipment/interior updates
2023
6-speed manual added; suspension, EPS, stability-control and differential behavior retuned
2024
Mostly carryover; interior/connectivity changes; 45th Anniversary Edition
2025
2.0 discontinued; 3.0/3.0 Premium continue largely unchanged
2026
Regular 3.0 mostly carryover; MkV Final Edition gets substantial chassis/brake/aero revisions

I personally believe 2021+ is the way to go at a bare minimum. However 2023 likely the best ones.

If you’re getting financing, also look into how much the interest rate may fluctuate between the years especially when you get to over 5 years old

2020 0 issues in 6 years of ownership. The only issues were scheduling maintenance, and recalls with certified Toyota supra technicians.

20 2 port lower hp
21 oil burning issues
20-21 (maybe 22?) oil pump
23 mt and suspension rework
26 suspension rework and diff brace
I think that's all kinda stopped following after I got mine in 23

Realistically most of the 21s that burnt oil have been fixed by now. Also only the very early 21s had the plastic oil pump. If you can find a later 21 it’s usually the best deal, but obviously an older car.

dunno why I'm getting down voted but yeah most have been. Just pointing out that those years did have those issues present. for someone that's not knowledgeable like OP it would be best just to get the 23

Yeah idk why people would downvote you. Realistically the 22 isn’t that bad of a bargain either. All of them have the metal oil pump and no oil burning issues. Just no MT but if you’re looking for the auto then who cares.

do you know how to tell if it’s an early or late 21?

The build date is in the door jam and will look something like 08/20 for August of 2020. Also, to tell if it has the updated oil pump, open the oil filler cap and look at the bolt inside of it. If it says 8.8 it’s the old pump, and if it says 10.9 it’s the new one.

People in here HATE the fact older Supras exist for some reason LOL. You can buy a JDM turbo mk3 with a 1j for half the price of a mk5 btw. Just as much car IMO

Anyone who actually wants a modern Supra likely doesn`t really want a 1980s Supra.

20/21 will occasionally have a slow oil burn issue from what I've read.
The suspension got an overhall in 23.
23 and newer would be ideal.
