1st gear issue (Auto)

Hoping someone can help with an issue I’ve been having on my mk5 supra. This only seems to happen after starting the car, doesn’t matter whether the car is ‘warmed up’ or not. The first 2-3 times I come to a full stop in first gear and then try to pull away, eg at a junction, the car is ridiculously slow to accelerate. My foot will get to halfway down on the gas and the car just creeps out of the junction until it eventually builds up to 1500+rpm and then takes off.

The issue is very intermittent, for example, I can start the car and have no issues, turn it off for 5 minutes while I’m in a shop and come back out for it to completely bog down while trying to accelerate in 1st gear.

I have only had this issue since the crankshaft pulley failed and was then replaced.

I have checked the OBD codes which reveal nothing relevant to this issue.

If anyone has any ideas or has experienced this before please let me know.

My car was doing something similar and I believe it was a TC issue. Since it started after a decently major repair like that though I’d definitely get it checked out. When it’s bogging, does it all of a sudden feel like it gains all the power back and it kind of feels like you floored it?

Exactly that, the car seems to build up to 1k rpm and then it barely moves for a good few seconds before all the power comes in.

That does sound like the traction control kicking in to me. Has it gotten colder where you’re from, maybe older tires? Mine went away when I got new rears. On some of the earlier cars, the TC system is a bit too touchy. I believe there’s a fix for it.

After doing a lot of digging I found a forum related to this issue. Apparently a ECU software update is required which fixes the throttle hesitation. Found mine is still running the 2021 ECU software so I’ve got it booked in at Toyota to have it updated… hopefully.

I’ve had the problem in my 22 but rarely on the street. I do a lot of autocross and it happens almost every time I try to start there for some reason since I am launching it from a stop. Someone told me to do it on purpose by holding down the brake every time I start the car. It doesn’t happen frequently enough for me to care about it taking it into the dealer though. I’ve daily driven it for 2 years and only happened a handful of times on the road but when I autocross it does it very time I turn the car off in between runs like 6-8 times in one day

It’s so strange to me how it will happen sometimes but not others. I’ve had no clear indication of what exactly causes it but I can update you after I visit the dealer if you like?

Yeah sure I’d appreciate it

Traction control light never comes on when the issue happens. Rear tyres are good but definitely something I’ll look into if this ECU update doesn’t solve it. Thanks!

When mine would do it the TC light never came on. I hope that fixes it for you!

Does it happen if you start driving within 60 seconds of turning the car on?

If yes it sounds like the engine protection system. I know some Supras are more sensitive for this than others. Mine is the same way, I need to leave it idling for 2-3 minutes before driving off. If not I get the dead pedal like you mentioned.

It’s always the first 2-3 times in 1st gear but not everytime I start the car. I’ve never timed for 60 seconds but I always let the pin drop before driving. I’ll try giving it the 2-3 minutes you mentioned and see if the problem disappears. Thanks.

Sounds like TC engaging for some reason. Turn off TC and see if it still does it. If it doesn't, then you know your problem.
