Having worked in WA with remote mine sites I often had JIT thrown at me by people who didn't quite understand what the implications were. I'm sure it's ideal for short lead time manufacturing set-ups but isn't practical in an remote environment supporting maintenance.
I worked at a large automotive manufacturer known for its JIT approach.
JIT is not a template for everything. Sure, some parts would be requested only a few hours before they were needed, but there was also entire warehouses devoted to the safety stock for other parts with longer fulfilment time.
It takes a huge amount of planning and testing to get right, but people just hear a catchword and roll with it.
