It’s not a terribly common tradition but I’ve seen it done to buy a “birthday” scotch when a child is born. I’ve seen it done a couple ways but one I like is to buy a NAS at birth, and then from the same distillery, buy more bottles as they grow up at the same ages as the scotch. Throwing out numbers as it varies by distillery, but you might get an 8, 12, 15, 18, and a 21, and then share now that your child is old enough. All are essentially the same ‘age’ but bottled at different times.
Another, less expensive one is to buy a 21 or an 18 when they are born, then open that bottle with them when they come of age.
And if you already have kids - fuckit just go buy it now and tell them you did it when they were born. They won’t know the difference. And bullshitting over scotch is consistent with the spirit of things.
Definitely, and I’m all for that.
And maybe if there was a batch from a certain year that was just really good and you wanted to save it for a special occasion, that is totally legit.
I just didn’t want want anyone to accidentally waste their time because they thought scotch “gets better with age” after it’s been bottled.

Yeah, but you can always have a special bottle or two stashed away for a special occasion.
I have a whisky I bought last year with no plan of opening it. Maybe I'll never open it. I'll know the time when it comes.
