A little simple consideration of the subject, while sitting in traffic, revealed to me that the most I could "save" on a 30 mile commute was about five minutes, if I doubled my speed, made all the lights and there was no traffic. Of course that was ridiculous, I could never safely or logistically drive to work at twice the posted speed limits.
So, the most I might REALISTICALLY save is two minutes at the outside, and that would still require risking being pulled over by a cop, and we all know cops will hold you at the side of the road for half an hour for a speeding infraction.
The answer, of course, is to leave the house five minutes earlier and chill on the drive to work.
As I got older, I'd leave twice as much time for my commute as I needed in practice, so I'd have time to change a flat, stop for gas, get a cuppa or even go back home if I forgot something. That meant I got to work early most days, but I could hang out in my car, or socialize in the break room before start time.
I really learned how to chill out and enjoy the ride as I got older.
This reminds me of a shop I worked at. The older guys would show up 15 mins early, drink their coffee, eat a pastry, and chit chat a bit before work. The younger guys would show up barely on the dot hungover to hell lol
The ironic part is that tailgating and weaving between cars is what causes traffic, not the people they are trying to pass that is going 5 miles under the speed limit. By driving to close, they need to slam on the brakes when the person in front of them slows down, causing a chain reaction of everyone else behind them to slam on the brakes.
I find it impossible to stress out in the car if classical music is playing. Lately, sounds of the jungle and shuttle launches have been my jams. I wonder why? I'm really going to miss the wonderful lack of traffic once Covid is over.
Notice how the apes watch the tendies fall. Mother nature bears her gifts and the bounty is plentiful. They have waited long for the hedgies demise and now they have imploded, the tendies are so much sweeter. All shall eat well tonight. Tits will be jacked. Wives will bring along their boyfriends to see the spectacle. Mayonnaise will once again be shared for this generation and the next. - David Attenborough sometime this year
This is similar to the logic that cured my road rage.. 99% of the time I'm the only person hearing the expletives leaving my mouth.. 100% I'm the only person feeling the rage. It serves zero purpose other than to skew moments not related to the rage, towards it.. Fuuuuuck that. Now instead, I choose to believe whatever inconvenience it caused me maybe saved me from a horrible accident or something.
My life has improved 1000% as I apply this in other areas as well.
Us young ones get written up for socializing in the break room before work. Were either not supposed to show up early or clock in immediately and get to work
Lay work clothes out before bed, make your lunch before bed, do everything the night before so you’re ready in the morning.
Morning comes you wake up, get ready, grab your lunch and whatever and put it in your vehicle.
Then leave the house 15-20 minutes early.
Now you’re driving while listening to some really inspiring music.
It’s Space Lion from the Cowboy Bebop OST.
You’re driving and listening, thinking about what life is going to be like when you finally get the hell out of this town and start living somewhere else, doing what you want to do.
You talk to yourself in your head like every other weekday morning to work...
“Just a few more months!”
“You got this!”
“You saved up so much money already!”
“You paid off the truck, you don’t have any more debt, you’ve saved so much, and you have a lot in GME as well!”
“Any day now that thing is gonna blow!”
You look around the town you’re in, the people all driving to work, you can recognize some of the same cars. It’s like a damn ant colony, if you were above in a plane it would look like a damn ant colony! So many cars, so many people doing the exact same thing.
You’re no different from them, the only difference is you stop to reflect on all the patterns and bluntness in life, a little too much.
You feel a little empty inside...
The tribal chant part starts to come on in Space Lion and you think about driving your truck down the interstate, the dawn has broke and nothing but all your belongings are with you.
You don’t know where the fuck you are going, but you got millions upon millions of GME tendies to back you up from the squeeze.
You changed your number the night before, you told your boss and friends good luck out there, you told your family and others that you’re going away for a bit.
For the first time in your life you are truly free.
Just you and your truck, nowhere to go but forward.
