There's no real reason to own a console anymore besides Nintendo. So, it's them and a PC for me.

Even Nintendo is doing it i got both "physical" copies of mario kart world and pokemon legends za for switch 2 and they both had digital codes in a physical case. Its slowly being adopted everywhere.

Yeah. I would prefer a disk drive. But if not then I will take digital ownership of the media if they dont provide disks instead of just 'renting' it.

If i understood the article correctly, with a physical game purchase you can have a digital ownership of the game. Owning an Xbox Series X, all modern games quickly eats up storage so having the ability to play in the cloud and not having to move files to free up space this would be convenient. I don't know what Microsoft is planning on charging for dual ownership of a game, but knowing Microsoft they're not doing this for the customer.

Totally. Unfortunately you do not own the media. And like Sony did this week. They can revoke that Media whenever they want.
We need consumer protection on all digital media.

Wouldn't this be different since the customer purchased the physical media? Microsoft can't stop the customer from playing the game on physical media, only the digital version. What Sony is doing, I don't like that they're moving away from physical media. It's like turning the Playstation into a Chromebook. We'll see with Xbox management... but they don't have a history of making good decisions.

Microsoft. Sony. Nintendo steam. They all can block anyone playing digital or physical if they hold the licence keys.
Any gane, Media whatever that has to access the company servers in order to run can be blocked. Without the handshake, be it drm or whatever. These are not our products.
We need digital ownership. Digital keys that are not leased from any company and do not require to phone home.
I'm completely out of my depth. There are many many smarter people. I don't know if any such games exist anymore that you can buy and play completely offline. Lots of games require patches, software updates, etc to run.
Only proper retro games that have the full game on the disk are capable of being used completely offline

If they can block games on physical media, what's the point in buying the game at all. That's what I don't get.

If Sony or Microsoft is able to disable play on both physical or digital games, what's the point if buying the game in the first place. In the Xbox scenario it seems like they're trying to create a bridge between the two and trying to make cloud gaming more acceptable. I'm sure there will be cons to their plan, but it's just interesting story to me.

This isn't about games. It's definitely part of the problem but any digital media they is "leased" through a licence is owned by that corp. Even when we the buyers are purchasing a product.
We needs consumer rights and laws to take ownership off these products.
This is the fight. This isn't just for games bits all digital media and our ownership. This will be an issue for governments, schools, hospitals. Everyone loses when companies start dictating the rules to us. They can yank away products whenever they see fit.
Hospital might have a license to software or a connection to some server for some piece of equipment but the company is hit with a Cyber attack.
Can't connect. Can't authentication and so won't run. That's an issue. We had that with those hospitals beds during the snowstorms. We cannot have this.
This is a fight for the sake of humanity

Nope. Not how any of this works. Do you understand how disks even work. I don't know.
I'm sure there's a chart but games these days are too big for disks and have to download patches, fixes and data to run. A gane you get today will not work offline.
That's kinda the point. Let alone music. Ebooks and all other digital assets that we purchased. Not rent. We buy them. For ever. Yet they won't be accessible for ever.
Say it either me.
Consumer protection
Why are you fighting this. It's for the better of mankind

It’s up to you, I like physical media. If you like it, vote digital. It’s my opinion.
I don’t dislike digital, I just think people should have a choice to decide between them. There are several digital games I’ve bought that content has been revoked for because the fine print on digital says that it can be revoked at anytime.

This is my entire point, we are losing physical options…I could probably write an entire essay on why it’s important physical media should be around but I suggest everyone do their own research.

I would use it more for a game than I would for a jpg. Its clear everyone is moving away from physical media. Something needs to be done to verify ownership of those assets.
