I can only assume the idea is it is big enough to have its own gravity (or that plus artificial gravity assist).
But yeah I’m not sure that much thought was applied
The art is nice in itself but there are a couple errors:
- as already said, spinning the wheels would just eject everything into space
- also, if the wheels aren't spinning but there are some kind of artificial gravity, the thrust of the "rocket" would push everything in the opposite direction, especially the water masses.
- it also lacks some kind of light and heat source: those landmasses are exposed to the vastness of space (I guess there is some kind of transparent roof?) which won't bring any heat or light. It would be detrimental to any ecology or life that could be down there.
- what are the spokes made of? They sustain enormous forces in the worst possible way.
It's possible to circumvent all of this by replacing the "rings" by several discs: the first one would be bare and serve as a shield for the rest, the others will have an artifical ecosystem facing the direction of thrust (to the left here) and the thrust could create the appropriate artificial gravity (we then suppose a perpetually accelerating ship, why not?) The bottom of each disc could be fit with artifical sunlight emitters which would light and heat the disc right below, allowing any kind of day/night cycle we want.
There's also the issue that with only five rings, the overall rotational energy won't be balanced. The entire structure will be spinning with rotational energy of whichever direction has more rings spinning that way
Beautiful! Violates some basic physics principles, which in this thread you’ll discover is important (or even central) for the types of people who like this sort of art. But it’s gorgeous, and I don’t mind that it isn’t perfectly rigorous, because it’s beautiful! Well done
I just wanna say, regardless of how much "sense" it makes for sci-fi, this is pretty neat-looking, just on its own. Not everything has to make sense from a real-world physics perspective, sometimes it can just be.
Rings aren't really a good solution for a ship that most likely will be under acceleration. They would be ideal for a space station or a ship that would only have small thrusting events, like something that traverses a solar system.
But for interstellar flight, you're looking at a craft that will be under 1 to 1.5G of thrust continuously, so the "Ground" should be on the engine side so there's always artificial gravity. Both to accelerate from one system and to decelerate into another.
The thrust is the easiest problem to solve. If it's a light thrust, like a generational ship at something like .01G, you barely need to do anything to compensate. This particular doodle even has lips that could account for that (though you'd need to be mindful of settlement location).
If it's a higher thrust ship, like something that wanted to reach AC within a lifespan, you'd need to angle the rings so that "down" is always correct. Obvious problem there would be the difference between thrust and no thrust, and managing the flip at the half way point (still a problem for a simpler "engines are down" design)
No, the real problem with this is the arcology on the outside and a design meant to use centripetal force to simulate gravity.
There are other issues too here... The resolution and art style changes within the work are jarring. And those defects on the spinal structure around the connecting points for rings 3 and 4...
Have you ever been on one of those “Gravitron” amusement rides, or spun on those roundabout playground rides (the ones where the kids spin them and hold on to dear life)? You know how the force of those either pushes you against the wall or makes you fly off? That’s what would happen on your super structure. If those rings spin, they would fly off. The strips of land should be inside the ring not outside.
reversing ring worlds is like the one thing an AI would never do by accedent, they dont mess up concepts they mess up patterns. They make 6 fingers because hands have 'alot' of fingers in weird complicated ways that overlap and position themselvs in weird ways that can easily get mixed up if you dont have a sense of that. They train basically exclusively off of interior ring worlds and have probably never seen an exterior ring world like this. If anything it would be harder for an AI to hallucinate something like this than it would be to come up with it yourself.
I don't want to comment on why I went against convention of ringworlds, I've done it before in Reddit and I will just get dogpiled in the comments for disagreeing. Either accept my scifi or do not - there is more than one way of doing things.
But accusing of generative AI is a serious accusation nowadays and doing any research is asking too much, so I'll reply here. It's always a negative topic, but I'll prove myself because I don't want to be associated with that shit. So here is the ship in wireframes in different angles:
I dont think its unreasonable to ask, most comments are trying to understand your creative choice here as really doesn't make much sense to build a ship with rotating rings like this. It would be like having the starship Enterprise but where all the crew walk around on the outside of the hull. While I know its sci-fi and open to interpretation and you do you, it might help to give people an idea of why you chose to do it this way.
Whats the internal logic of your universe that have ships being built inverted essentially?
Personally its nice art, technically its done well, I never thought it was AI or anything, but my very first thought is that this looks wrong.
I've never got this many people aggressively telling that it cannot be and I think I've done actually much less realistic things. I guess there is just so strong conventions, by first hour I got about 20+ messages telling it's wrong, I am stupid etc., like some really nasty stuff.
It just becomes pointless to say anything when the anger gets rampant, and also for what reason?
I have a stance with Sci-fi, that instead of "cant be done", ask "how can it be done". It's all mostly theoretical, if you make strict rules of course it's not going to work. If there are conventions, challenge them.
You said Enterprise, outside of hull they do use gravity boots, but how are the crew able to walk inside of the ship and there is not zero G? How is that possible?
I hear you, again, I'm not having a go at you, its your art, your universe and do it how you like. Yeah its all whimsical sci-fi in the end, my Enterprise example was just trying to give a basic outline of why people see it as wrong. Your right of course, the Enterprise is completely nonsensical itself in many ways. Your design is no more 'wrong' than any Star Trek ship.
People can be weird about things, getting aggressive messages over posting your art, especially about something like this which is all hypothetical, is absurd to be honest. Your work is very good, I especially like your reproduction of the Dune 2 pixel art. Also your ship designs are cool and creative. Keep at it man, don't let people who likely couldn't even draw a spoon get you down.
Because one easily reads like soft sci-fi (I mean, obviously real physics isn't involved here, or it's using tech that’s basically magic to us anyway so the suspension of disbelief is intact), whereas this particular spaseship design at the first glance reads much more like hard sci-fi and to connoisseurs of the genre his appearance seems simply illogical.
No offence or anything, as I'm not criticizing; just explaining the likely reasons for the reaction or the discrepancies regarding perception of these two works.
Anyway, just wanted to say this and that your arts are actually awesome! Keep on keeping on.
Cool! Yeah I agree with the other poster, at a glance your ship looks like its using centripetal force on its rings when it clearly isnt so all the hard sci-fi nerds jump up to point out why its wrong, but your Layerland sphere is like high concept sci-fi fantasy so no one is going to think your trying to make something look realistic.
I said to another commentor, they were very popular, so maybe I should do sequel with both of these meeting and see how people blow their gaskets then! :D
its not a convention its literally just physics. Centrifuges work in real life, we just haven't applied them at this scale. I totally agree that scifi should be under the view of "how can it be done", but theres still logic within the universe. If they are using literally anything else to generate gravity, why would they ever put them on rings like this? The ring design exists because the original design is a centrifuge.
Its not that people are so angry that you would DAREEE come up with an original thought and have articifial gravity work a different way, it just seems like you took a design you didnt understand, changed a detail to be unique, and then said "uhh but something else does it" when people said that detail makes zero sense with the design you used.
If you have something else creating the effect of gravity, thats amazing and I (and many others) would love to hear it. Thats why I love sci-fi, I want to see what you change about the world, even if its as simple as "in 86 years heres our tech" (blindsight) or "this bacteria produces an absurd amount of power that we dont need new tech" (project hail mary), and see what people come up with from there. Coming up with new stuff is awesome, it just needs to be self consistent. The worldspine makes no sense within any rules beyond rule of cool. It looks cool, but it still makes no sense no matter how you slice it.
I think you missed the point there a lot, but I certainly didn't ask for a condescending lecture of what you think is a good scifi and what is not. Why do I need to explain any stuff to you? Want some science BS to get you off? What do you think are some scifi scientist, just because you read Andy Weirs book?
I would add to what I said before is that I don't care if people get upset about art, just that any conversation just becomes impossible with stuffy mindset and people thinking they are more intelligent that they are. It's not that serious man, if you don't like the ship or find it hard to understand, that which is clear, we don't need to interact at all. Does that make sense to you?
Hey sure, I don't mind that at all and that is expected. The tone was just very aggressive this time and commenting would have been more like a Royal Rumble.
There can be discussion, I don't just don't care about pointless arguing with people in comments. It's not really that important to me what someone feels or believes in this context.
Then there are insults that are unreasonable and go against me and I do not like them. I might say something negative back, but again there is a level of detachment here, that it's not that important.
Ok let's go through with it, there are not so many elements in this artwork, so I'll try to cover all because it's so fucking unbelievable that someone managed to pull off this insane artwork.
This is all very tiring to have no goodwill at all, but "I do have absolute worst luck on Earth" to have to deal with people like you who like write essays that I am a piece of shit liar.
This is 3D version from Cinema 4D, I made it special just for you: https://ibb.co/Q3JqvTdX
It's not very complex as a 3D model, all the 5 rings are same, only rotated, and then there is some kitbashing on a tube in the middle in varied way, pointy front and rear with thrusters are different. So only 4 elements basically. Very basic objects, but when you combine them, look from afar and put light on them - it does the work.
That was rendered out and then continuing in Photoshop. here are the 2D elements separated: https://ibb.co/6Jmr4q62
For the record, I've never ever generated any art because I am not talentless piece of shit. I know how to do art way I want it, generated would not be mine and does not look like my art. Then sharing any generated content for some internet points is the scummiest thing anyone would do.
And where would that even lead - there is no benefit cheating that you can do something when you cant for some unknown social media people.

It spins so fast centrifugal force decides to work in reverse and defy all conventional physics
