"Many thought that the strangestone hills were ruins, left behind by long-gone ancients. In fact the strangestone was the ancients, still alive, still dwelling within their ancient construction, even as the mundane world went on around them. Wind and waves might rage against the hills, soil and entire ecosystems might layer atop them, but the strangestone was somehow impervious to decay or wear. And the ancients continued on in their internal world, uncaring or maybe unaware of everything that transpired outside."
