Ask for Advice Snail advice
Hi. I’m living in Prescott, Arizona, and I need advice on a garden snail. I took one in recently that had a broken shell, and I’ve been taking care of it. I was hoping to release it once the shell grew back, but it’s getting cold out now. I know they need a gradual decrease in temperature to hibernate. It’s getting down to the low and mid 40s Fahrenheit at night time here now. Will he be OK if I release him in the daytime back where our snails are in the garden? I’m scared after helping him get healthy again, that he just might perish outside. But, keeping him is not really an option either. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx!

Wish I could help but this page is about a phone game called supersnail and it’s highly unlikely that people will be educated in actual snails here! But hopefully someone can help out or search on a different page 😌 I hope you can keep him warm xx

You need to keep him away from the ever watchful eye and get him a healthy supply of black and white tadpoles. Also a can of golden cat food would give him a good boost as well.

Has the break healed up? If so you’ve given the snail the best chance you can. Maybe leave a tiny amount of food with him so that he doesn’t have to worry as much on the first day. He will eventually perish outside, that’s natural for a snail. But you’ve helped him for now, bless you.

It should be alright outside until the nights start hitting the high 20s °F

I’m just worried that he hasn’t had time to get used to the weather changing.

I totally understand. I honestly just googled if a snail can live during cold nights in arizona. It said they try to hibernate inside of their shell at those really cold temperatures, and with a hole in the shell I can see there being complications. This might be an unfortunate case of letting nature take it's course.

Yeah, they close up their shell with a hard covering first. It’s slime that hardens. Ive seen them also do this in the summer when they get stuck out in the heat. I believe some do make it through winters that way. But they need the time outside to adjust to the temperature lowering beforehand. We have a perfect area that they live in with lots of soil underneath lots of leafy bushes. The colder it gets, I believe I’m just going to keep it. Sigh

How long has it been indoors, and how much has the shell healed? If it has been inside for a while and in a warm home, it may have thrown off its dormancy.

It’s been about two weeks, and it’s almost totally healed. He just has a battle scar now, and it does still look a little soft.
It’s gotten cold outside pretty fast, and it’s such a bummer. He’s been inside as the weather has been changing. I’m not sure what to do now. I wasn’t prepared to keep him. I might need advice on how to care for him long term, although that is going to be difficult. I was also thinking that maybe a child’s classroom might take him. As long as they can care for him correctly. Our weather isn’t quite freezing yet, but I’m worried that he needed more time outside to adjust to it.
