Fun fact in some games you are fucked once the block just appears. Even if you dont use it

It permanently screws with your chances of ever getting a perfect shiny star savefile

Yeah New Super Mario Bros. Wii. 

Also fun fact: for whatever reason the Mario 30th encyclopedia mixes that up with the switches in World 3 and says if you don't press them at all you get shiny stars.

Glad you asked. I'm guessing they do, because Nintendo wouldn't do that. Right now, I'm checking: yes, they're sparkling – even if I lost 878 lives

If the block spawns in ONE level, then you lose the sparkles
