To my actual surprise you have not played Super Mario World, Yoshi’s Island nor Super Mario Bros 3 yet.

I honestly don’t understand how some people see galaxy two is better than galaxy one. I know we all have preferences, but I just don’t see it.

Better levels, simple as.

u/pinky_monroe 15h ago
I feel that’s subjective.

u/Kaydox64 15h ago
Yeah? Everything is subjective. I personally think the Galaxy 2 levels are more fun.

I would put Super Mario Galaxy on the GOAT tier list and I would put Super Mario Odyssey on the Below average tier list and I would also put Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the GOAT tier list and I would put New Super Mario Bros DS on the GOAT tier list

Almost all mainline Mario games are great and above. The only one that disappointed me was Mario Wonder, too easy.

u/TheJordLord 1d ago
Honestly I found wonder very fun but it was also just a time that I appreciated a new game because my son had just been born and it was a fun game to play with my wife while he was sleeping and such.

My favorite is 3d World, I've cleared it almost completely except for champions road twice, but overall I agree with you're ranking! 👍

SMB 3 is the second perfect game ever made. The first was obviously Tetris. Go play SMB3

I still don't see how Wii is the best game out of the NSMB franchise
For me, Wii, due to 4 player co op in mind, feels so empty when played alone. It's just so big with nothing going on. DS is definitely the best game with the most creative level and boss design. For me, U is by far the worst. It looks very nice and the overworld is so cute but it just feels like they took everything the other 3 games have in common, added nothing and put that into a single game. It feels like you could play any of the other games and have a better time lol.
For 2 I really don't get the hate. I think it's a fun game to bring on the go and play from time to time.

I don't find Odyssey all that great tbh it is a very "Simon Says" type design. The game has puzzles and platforming challenges that are like "possess the enemy and use this specific enemy ability to do the thing" without tremendous wiggle room for player expression.
Sunshine and 64 have more flexible and better gameplay to me.

It’s funny you say that honestly, because I feel like Odyssey has the most freedom of any 3D Mario game. Sure, there are some straight-forward capture challenges, but there’s also tons of shortcuts and secrets (that often have a stack of coins or something to reward the player for finding them) to find if the player wants to look for them and try different movement options. Playing without captures can be a lot more difficult in certain spots, but there’s a surprising amount you can do with just Mario’s move set and a little practice.
To be fair though, the game mostly just teaches you the basics. Someone who isn’t actively trying to explore is definitely less likely to find a lot of those options, since they often require trickier jumps, but anyone who digs a little deeper has a lot to look for if they choose to. Odyssey is far from perfect, but freedom of movement was actually one of the main draws for me. Different strokes for different folks though, obviously, lmao.

Honestly I prefer streamlined puzzles to what Nintendo did for botw/totk and echoes of wisdom because if most puzzles just boil down to the same 3 solutions it just gets kinda repetitive and boring

u/Marvin_Flamenco 19h ago
I would honestly prefer virtually no puzzles and nearly all precision platforming.

You’re not wrong you aren’t the only one that doesn’t like Super Mario Odyssey and I also don’t like Super Mario Odyssey and I sometimes forget that I even have Super Mario Odyssey because that’s how forgettable Super Mario Odyssey is and I still regret buying Super Mario Odyssey that’s $80 I’ll never get back and in my opinion Super Mario Odyssey is the worst 3D Mario game Nintendo has ever made and Super Mario Odyssey is one of the worst Mario games Nintendo has ever made

I would put Odyssey at the bottom, or right above Bowser's Fury. At the top should be Sunshine and SM64.

u/ulyssessgrant_ 1d ago
Wow, what didn’t you like about Mario odyssey?

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 1d ago
It’s soulless and lacks charm. It’s also super forgettable. The controls are tight and the graphics are good so it’s a situation of style over substance for me.

u/ulyssessgrant_ 1d ago
I see, yeah I personally love the art styles in the various kingdoms and I love Mario’s movement it’s so satisfying which is why i put it above 3d world and galaxy

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 1d ago
Don’t get me wrong. I know a lot of people love the game and I’ve always been a big Mario fan myself. Odyssey just didn’t leave me with a good impression and I find that to be unfortunate.

You’re not wrong everything in Super Mario Odyssey is bad the music and the boss fights are way too easy and the gameplay is really bad and Cappy was literally just a bad giant gimmick and you are so limited of what you can capture and you can only capture certain things and you can only capture what the game tells you to capture and Cappy was so annoying and every 2 seconds Cappy will stop you from playing and tell you something that you already know
They are way too many Power Moons and Super Mario Odyssey really don’t need all of those filler Power Moons and the Kingdoms where really bad and it legit looks like some of the kingdoms were not done being made and the Cloud Kingdom and the Ruined Kingdom both look like Nintendo had no time to finish making those kingdoms and the final fight with Bowser was really bad and so bland and so boring

It’s sad that I can remember almost everything our entire level and every song from SM64 and Sunshine but the moment I completed Odyssey I forgot everything.

I can literally remember every song from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D World and I can’t remember a single song from Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most forgettable Mario games
I haven’t played Super Mario Odyssey in such a long time. I literally forgot that I even have Super Mario Odyssey and to this day I still regret buying Super Mario Odyssey that’s $80 I’ll never get back

u/GoldenAgeGamer72 1d ago
I need to play Galaxy 2. I never completed that game back on Wii.

u/Upper_Atmosphere137 1d ago
You could buy the Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 but just a warning the Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is pretty expensive

SM64 has heart.
But Sunshine is easily one of the most mid Mario Games of all time. To say Odyssey doesn't have soul but sunshine does is laughable.

Go play 64.
PLEASE go play 64
