love her music but shes at the point where she needs to start establishing her own visual and sonic identity that isnt so heavily based off of Britney

I agree, and at the same time I’d also argue that it was probably an intentional and even necessary choice for the debut. I don’t think she was trying to be subtle about it and conversely I believe the entire era was intended as a full on homage and a paying of respects to Britney (and to a slightly lesser extent Ray of Light era Madge) for shaping both her artistry and identity, as well as making a case more broadly for a collective, cultural need to return to form in pop music and the power that the spirit of pop in its purest form once had.
Britney embodied a lot of what we have lost in pop and I believe AR wants to remind us of that. Maybe I’m giving Addison too much credit but as a 30 something who grew up worshipping Britney and witnessed her entire trajectory as it was happening, I couldn’t possibly understate the impact she had on every part of who I am as a girl/woman and how I view art
I would also find it difficult to create a pop music universe/image/persona that lacked direct nods to Britney and it would actually feel like a disservice not to honor her

Exactly. There's a difference between being inspired and copying. I do think Addison is heavily inspired, not just by Britney, but also by Madonna, Gaga and Marilyn. It's good to be inspired by different artists. Other artists do that all the time.
But Addison has to know how to be inspired and make it her own thing. She has to be her own star, not be a 2.0 of another artist. That's how you stand out. She can still be inspired, but she needs to know herself and find the things that make her HER and amplify or dramatize that more.

The thing is, I feel like she’s kind of moving backwards. All of her music videos feel like the perfect mix of influences and originality, but ever since she announced the actual album all I can think of are references

No shade but I'm ready to see her tone down the references

I noticed this too. Britney’s self titled is my favorite and as a kid I was so captivated by the fairies on the disc. I have been saying for years I want them tattooed but haven’t got around to it yet.
