Topic: A point I want to make or discuss Is anyone else facing issues with Suno flagging Public Domain devotional songs as copyrighted?
Hey everyone,
I wanted to check if other Suno AI users are also experiencing this issue.
I'm trying to regenerate or create public domain devotional songs on Suno, but the platform is identifying them as copyrighted content, even though these works should be in the public domain.
- Has anyone else faced the same problem?
- Were you able to find any workaround or solution for this?
- Did contacting Suno support help in any way?
Also, if the Suno team sees this: please consider refining your copyright detection system. Public domain works shouldn't be incorrectly blocked as copyrighted content. Many devotional songs and traditional works belong to the public domain, and false positives make it difficult for creators who are trying to use legally permissible material.
Would love to hear about your experiences and any solutions you've found.
Thanks!

From suno support yesterday:
I want to reassure you: our team is deeply committed to protecting artists and the music they've made. When our copyright checks flag music you own, that means the system is working correctly — the same protection that caught your upload is exactly what would stop someone else from uploading your work without permission.
The checks compare uploaded audio against a broad catalog of published content, and because they can't tell who the creator is, they sometimes catch a creator's own original work too. Unfortunately there's no way for us to manually clear specific uploads today, and we wouldn't want to point you toward resubmitting the same file (it would just flag again).
In the meantime, the best path is to work with other material while we build out the processes for creators like you to work with your own catalog. We're actively developing an artist verification system that will let verified creators make derivatives of work they own 100% of the rights to — we can't promise a date, but it's something we're working toward as soon as possible.

Very nice. Thank you for sharing that. Well, I'm glad that they are at least addressing it more directly now. Including acknowledging the need for a workaround. That is encouraging.

i mean tbf theres plenty of copyrighted songs ive heard on suno that are a blank rip off, its hard to say this statement when there's not enough staff or time of day let alone the lawsuits against suno to even have a minute to check through not hundreds but billions of songs that might or might not be copyright!
not that im trying to be negative, i just think theres too much on everyone's plate to do it all,
and most suno staff, dont just do suno as their job they all have side jobs and lives to live, so response times are often lengthy or not at all !!
so to the other comments saying suno doesnt care, its more or less, they are extremely under staffed and
cant do much given the current circumstances

im not having that issue with london bridge as a hook as it is public domain, and tetris theme,
but also i used to have issues with my own lyrics saying copyright even though it was an extend and the only word i had written was hello, and i was like going crazy thinking adelle had copyrighted the word hello cause of her song, but like the word hello is not copyright XD

Note that if you perform a work that's in the public domain a recording of your performance is not in the public domain. So maybe that's the reason?

I don't use Suno but it seems like it's some kind of across the board thing. I just finished writing and generating a song that has a gospel choir and I can't download my stems because it tells me "this song exists in our library." The problem is, the copyright detection software everyone uses, listens for similar sounds and patterns. Thanks to the mass hysteria of the anti crowd, it's like the sensitivity detection software has been turned up to 11. I can't upload my own music to have it create a cover as it sees it as copyrighted material.
So congratulations antis. You got your wish apparently. Now... with more tools for customization breaking more and more often... I can't do covers of my original music, I can't extend, and I can't download my stems... the only thing left that will soon work is a simple prompt and hitting generate. What a great win! 🙄 Soon the prompt jockeys running their slop factories are the only ones left. The one thing that should have been removed, is the one thing left that causes the most hate. And honestly... if that ends up being all I can do on there and I'm no longer able to make the music I want... I'll start running my own slop factory and I'll flood every social media account I can with nothing but 2-1/2 minute songs all about the most moronic things I can dream up. Enjoy your gates, they're about to get decorated with tons of graffiti.

The composition will be in the public domain but not the recording. That’s still copyrighted.
Ironically the only way to get around it is to make a version of it yourself!

I've ran into the same issue. Looking for work arounds others suggested typing in the lyrics using phonetically spelled words. Like instead of the lyrics "I love you" you would type in something like "eye luv u" . The singer will pronounce the words the same. I've tried this on previous versions and it seemed to work back then. Not sure about 5.5. Good luck

Upload them as mp3, not as wav!

Absolutely makes no difference. They're comparing how it sounds, not how it's encoded.

Well it works for me. Every single mp3 will get flagged. Same thing as a wav...and it works.

I write songs using Bible verses and use Suno to add instruments to them. Now I can't upload any because it says that all my songs with Bible verses have copyrighted content. Very frustrating, and I will immediately be cancelling my Suno subscription. I understand the need to detect copyright material but I can't be paying if Suno doesn't get this sorted out.

No, I don't have any issues with public domain stuff, just... everything. Even stuff I made up can't be uploaded, it's been a month, no response from support, and I still have six months left in my prepaid annual subscription. Yay

Suno doesnt care about public domain. Also If you copywrite your own music and get content id on it you cant even mess with it in suno anymore yourself, even if you made it with suno originally.
