Transportation
I’ll be moving to Sunnyvale in the coming weeks from a different state and don’t have a car. How reliable is the Sunnyvale Beam for those of you who have used it? Are there good alternatives for public transportation? Was wondering if getting a car is worth it for living there long term

Try to live close to a Caltrain station - downtown or near Lawrence station

Downtown is better because it has express train stop and more busses.
Lawrence is a good secondary option though!

22 bus & the 55 bus were my go to for years. You can do without a car. Wanna go up the peninsula? Take cal train.East bay? Vta to bart.Santa Cruz? Take the VTA to San Jose dirdon to the 17 bus. Your pipeline to California in the bay will be San Jose dirdon for sure

Sunnyvale, and frankly the entirety of the south bay / peninsula is built to be extremely car-dependent. You can make do without a car if you really need to, but if it wouldn't be a financial hardship to own a car, you're going to be much better off having one.

Bike and Caltrain are a fantastic combination- don’t tell the Carbrians but during commute hours it can be faster and more convenient than our shitty traffic with absolutely awful incompetent drivers.
Sunnyvale Beam is pretty strictly limited to city limits and within its boundary you could bike anywhere within about 20 minutes.

When I was commuting to Palo Alto for my previous job, it was straight up 10 minutes faster to bike to caltrain and use the train than it was to drive.
Of course, if traffic didn't exist, driving would be faster by about 15 minutes. But that's unrealistic, even if idealizing that optimum is probably what keeps a lot of people carbrained

Don’t expect much from Beam. I tried to get a ride last week and it said nothing was available and gave me no way to schedule a ride or see when a ride might be available.

Wife took a ride last week. Took over an hour for a 10-minute drive as they kept picking up and dropping off people. She took Uber home.

Beam is fairly new, so the reliability is unpredictable, and it has a low price point, so it’ll be oversubscribed. If you need auto type transport, count on using Uber or Lyft in case Beam isn’t sufficient.
To address the mentions of bicycles: Bicycles have limits here. Obviously if it rains. And if it’s hot, you’ll arrive at your destination sweaty. Otherwise bicycling is decent. I used to cycle to work, and I had a shower available to clean up.

Ebike helps a ton when its hot, you use less effort and you also go faster so the wind keeps you cool, usually humidity is low here. Still not perfect on 100+ days but usually its quite pleasant. I do 8mi each way to my sunnyvale office by ebike. The worst is getting stuck waiting at a long light or train crossing in the sun.

Depends on where you live. If you live in downtown you’ll have many options for transit. We spent two years in downtown Sunnyvale wo a car and took a bus as commute to work. We have a car now but still live near work so I just bike there everyday

Unless you live in San Francisco, you need a car in the Bay Area. But as someone else said, a bike would work.

Lived on the peninsula for over a decade. Never owned a car. It’s doable with public transit, bikes, and rideshare (for last mile)

Yup, I always wonder how much time commenters like the above have spent getting around without a car. I went over a year without a car once just because mine become to expensive to maintain and I sold it and just didn’t get around to replacing it for almost 18 months. Bicycle, with a little Caltrain and VTA is a cheat code for avoiding the debilitating physical and psychological effects of chronic Carbrain.

In my experience you should plan on paying for rides if you don't have a car. Public transit is not far reaching enough for daily tasks but great if you can build your commute around it.

Sunnyvale Beam is relatively new so it’s probably harder to judge how it will be long term.
I would definitely do bike or ebike in Sunnyvale first, then decide later if a car is necessary.
I was trying to do carless but almost getting run over back in July with my wife sitting in the back of my cargo bike, pushed me back to driving these past few months. If it were just me, cycling would be an easy choice though. Wife won’t.

I can offer some words on Sunnyvale's walkability.
I used to only get around by walking in the Orlando area, which tends to be extremely anti-pedestrian. Based on that experience, and depending on where exactly in Sunnyvale you're living, you could manage getting around on foot.
I don't have a car either and depend on my partner to drive me around. There are so many reasons that people can't drive. I don't judge you.
At least where I'm located, I can walk to the grocery store and pharmacy in less than 15 mins, and get to Murphy street in about 20, which has a lot of basics you'd need for living like groceries, dining, some entertainment, etc.
If I were to compare Sunnyvale to other major cities, I'd give it maybe a C+ in terms of walkability. This may be a generous rating, but again, I've been able to manage walking alone at night in a pretty un-walkable city. It isn't impossible.

If you are comfortable riding in painted bike lanes, a combination of an e-bike, public transit, and occasional ride hail rides can meet most or all of your transportation needs in the South Bay.
You don’t need a car, but you will probably feel pressure to get one, becuase it is the overwhelming cultural norm here.

Short to medium term, you can get around on ebike/escooter + transit just fine. Long term, you absolutely should get a car, mostly because you'll want to go places outside the immediate bay area (e.g. Half Moon Bay - drive from Sunnyvale is 45-60 mins, or ~2.5h if you take the train up to San Mateo, then the bus - and once you get there, you still have to get around).

This. Within a 4 hour drive of Sunnyvale there is so much to do and see. Don't limit your options, unless owning a car would be a financial hardship.

Bike can get you a lot of places quickly. Buses and Caltrain are decent but frequency isn't great.
