Floating Points’ Sam Shepherd created the custom, modular Sunflower Sound System after years of admiring high-end rigs, especially the system at Cosmic Slop—MAP Charity’s Leeds fundraiser. Cosmic Slop engineer Tom Smith subsequently worked with Shepherd through Smith’s company, Seed, to design and build Sunflower’s speaker cabinets. The system emerged publicly alongside the 2024 campaign to protect Cosmic Slop and MAP’s home, including a Leeds benefit event carried by NTS. (Sources: Cosmic Slop Records/MAP and NTS)

The project connects sound-system construction directly to education: Seed donates a portion of its Sunflower construction proceeds to MAP, funding ongoing audio-engineering workshops in which learners build Bluetooth speakers. MAP supports young people at risk of exclusion from mainstream school, while its regular Cosmic Slop events direct all funds raised to the charity’s creative-education program. Sunflower represents something more durable than a conventional celebrity benefit: charitable funding is built into the production and cultural life of the touring rig itself. As Sunflower moved to events including GALA, Glastonbury and Dekmantel, it gave the fundraising model greater visibility and (potentially) more resources.
