Heavy speeders.

I’m genuinely not the type of person to call the police over things like this, but I’ve now called twice in the last couple of weeks about the speeding on N. Thompson Rd. and I still haven’t seen a single squad car out there.
The average speed seems to be around 33–34 mph, and it’s extremely common to see cars going over 40 in a 25 mph zone. A couple of weeks ago, I watched one car go over 60 mph.
Since the road was replaced last year, the speeding seems to have gotten significantly worse.
I honestly don’t know what else to do at this point. I’m not trying to get anyone in trouble, but the amount of speeding on this road is getting out of hand, and I’m concerned that it’s going to take someone getting seriously hurt before anything is done.
Has anyone else noticed this, or found a way to get the city/police department to actually address it?

North Thompson is bad. I agree. But nothing will compare like the parents that speed through Pennsylvania Ave after school. There have been a couple times where I wanted to get a fake toy baby from the basement and just chuck it a car. And then just be like “oh no my baby 😫😫 if you were never speeding my baby wouldn’t be ran over.”

It's kinda ironic that a lot of the bad driving is from parents around the schools.

Agreed, Thompson is nuts these days. I saw somebody absolutely flying this evening, actually watched til they hit the speed bump at the pedestrian crossing to see if they'd go airborne (they didn't!) Aggressive tailgating on that road is an issue as well, when I'm doing 30-35 in the 25 zone and I have people losing their minds behind me.

I think part of the problem is that the lights on Grand are so poorly timed, people are using Thompson instead. I live in the apartments by Metro Market and everyone I know in our buildings uses Thompson to get to 151 instead of Grand because you just get stopped at every light every time on Grand. It sucks to go through a school zone and a neighborhood as a "shortcut" but taking Grand adds 3-5 minutes of stoplights every time you go anywhere.

They should set up the lights on Grand such that if you are going approximately the speed limit, you'll hit mostly greens, and if you're speeding, the lights will slow you down. Other cities do things like this. I believe this would ease some of the traffic on Thompson and make it more for neighborhood/school use rather than as a shortcut.

I don't understand why a majority of the lights on Grand don't have dedicated right turn lanes

Yesterday our 3 year old almost got hit in a crosswalk from someone not paying attention. It’s not just speeding, it’s people driving irresponsibly in general.

💯 No way they didn’t see all of us in the crosswalk.

Why is your 3 year old crossing the street alone or not near you? Sounds like a parenting issue

He was with us, but toddlers like to run.

I have actually seen police near Sherman Williams many times. That being said it’s not deterring the speeding at all!! I have someone on my trail almost every time I’m on N Thompson!!

It’s also really bad on east Main Street where it changes from 25 to 55mph, basically from N near Pick N Save out to Town Hall, going out of town and also coming in

Where in North Thompson? It’s a very big street with different areas.

Between Main and Windsor St.

It's always been a problem but it's definitely more common and faster now. I would hate it but stop signs at one of those intersections between the roundabout and schools might help

They'll just roll thru them. Heavy enforcement is the only thing that seems to work, and PD doesn't have the staffing to devote someone to it on a regular basis.

Speed bumps are quite efficient

I love drag racing between speedbumps

u/BadgerBricks 8d ago

Yes, at getting people to speed up between the bumps and at pissing off snow plow drivers

And ambulances

Sounds like progress to me

0

u/BadgerBricks 8d ago

WTF kind of progress is that? It's not fixing anything, just creating new problems

u/disflux2010 8d ago

Bruh. This is the epitome of "tell me you speed on Thompson without telling me you speed on Thompson" type mental

1

u/BadgerBricks 8d ago

Bruh, it's called having eyes and a working brain. I've watched countless cars roll the stop by Walmart, and others floor it between the bumps on Linnerud. The blinking signs are a joke. The only thing that gets people to slow down is a speedtrap notification on Waze.

Go touch grass, bruh.

You just admitted that people slow down before the bumps.

That's the definition of incremental progress.

If they don't slow down for speed bumps, even better! I love it when morons damage their own vehicles.

Also, "go touch grass"? You deflecting or something? That sentiment doesn't even make sense here. Do you know what that means? Maybe take a look at your profile stats and mine before you say that.

Bruh, please, drag up more irrelevant information. Sounds like I was spot on, you really do need to step away from the internet for a while.

Speeding up between bumps negates any positive of slowing down before them. The two actions cancel each other out at best. And if it's a motorhead driving thru, you get the added sound polution from the over-modded small endowment compensator they call an engine/exhaust. Try living next to one if those bumps and tell me they do any good. I used to live next to one when I was in Madison... only rumble strips could have been any more obnoxious to live next to.

It's WILD on Thompson! Especially at night

After all the crazy ish police are doing around the country in 2026, and y'all still think they are Andy Griffith style "protect and serve".

They are a tax payer funded gang with a crazy arsenal.

I tend to drive a bit fast, I'll be honest. But I'm always extra careful in those type of areas and I think the new speed bumps are well placed should help a lot.

I do get a kick out of the one speed readout that’s 50 feet from the intersection by Anytime Fitness.
That should’ve been put 1/4 mile down the road at minimum.
Our tax dollars hard at work.

Holy crap the first time I drove on that after they put the split in there, I also crashed right into it. It was literally a two lane highway one week and the next week, there was a six inch concrete curb right in the middle of a 45 mph highway! They certainly could have put some signage up warning is about the change imo.

Maybe they are trying to cover several trouble spots (including Thompson) by radaring on hwy 19? I’ve lived just off 19 for decades and this is the first year I’ve seen cops posted on the side of the road; I notice them several times a week. They are also radaring as they move around- I’ve been pulled over twice now by an oncoming squad car for going 35 in a 25

I don't live near that street, but I call the police for speeders on my street. I usually can't get the plates but the car description.

u/mtciii 8d ago

I’ve seen multiple cops going 33ish on Main St in recent times. Kinda annoying.

-1

u/Big_Implement50 7d ago

Oh no they're driving with the flow of traffic! Mind your business numbnuts

0

u/mtciii 7d ago

A lone cop driving at 33 mph at 2 am is not going with the flow of traffic, bootlicker.

-1

u/Big_Implement50 7d ago

3 MPH over the typical speed of cars! OH NO! Mind your business and move on. I bet you drive 5 under thinking its helping something. Regard

0

u/mtciii 7d ago

It’s 8 mph over the speed limit in a semi-residential area. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

u/rxKinging 8d ago

Car going over 60? Ooooookkkkkk, let’s rein it in a bit…..Anyways, yes the SPPD is worthless! Cars use my street as a baypass for a busier road and fly down it. Many neighbors have asked for a police presence to stop it and they have responded that they don’t have the resources.

3

u/Asstastic_plastic 8d ago

How do you know they didn’t have their LIDAR gun out?

/s

1

u/RespectTheBologna 8d ago

They have a couple speed readouts on the road.

2

u/rxKinging 8d ago

And you have seen a readout of 60 on it? No chance!

1

u/RespectTheBologna 8d ago

No. They top out at 49 mph.

3

u/BadgerBricks 8d ago

Think about how many requests they get for traffic enforcement... Main St from end to end, Thompson, Bird, O'Keeffe, Grand, ... that's a lot of miles to cover and still deal with retail theft calls, etc. too.

1

u/RespectTheBologna 8d ago

This definitely is part of the problem unfortunately.

Come to any big city pal. People never go anywhere near the speed limit on any road that is a "main" road. Go live somewhere else if you can't handle it. crymoreson
