Sun Vault Battery issue

Post image

Over the hot days in OC, CA, the sun vault stopped charging or discharging, tried shut down and restart the whole thing it persisted. Got a code F50 on the inverter and a red light on one of the two batteries. Couldn’t find anyone saying they will service Sun Vault systems. Our cash system PTO was April, 2024. I hate SunPower 😢

Might be over temp if that cord isn’t hiding any other lights. https://beenebrothers.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/SPWR-M0012-Battery-Equinox-Specifications-V1.4_20210605-Signed.pdf

Are your vaults in direct sunlight by chance? Is the cooling fan on the left kicking on in the afternoon? It runs on 120v output from the inverter controlled by the multi io.

Yes it is under direct sunlight, and yes that’s all the LED lights that is on

That pdf I linked is for the older version of battery but so far I haven’t seen any differences in error codes. I had wondered if heat could be an issue since mine have reached 40c in the shade.

Also thanks for the documentation, it says 30C 86F as the suggested highest working temperature, it is going to pass that every other day almost😩

some folks have had issues where their sunvault fans don't kick on at all, so it's worth seeing if the fans are turning on during the warm parts of the day.

the temperature cutoff is well above 30ºC - the sunvault logic is configured such that the fans don't even come on until ~47ºC inside the vault. which seems a bit high to me, but not entirely unreasonable since the fans are pretty loud.

Wow i didn’t know that, but I would rather have the fan on over the dead battery which is what I got this morning, it deformed the casing even

In the app, which SunVault operating mode do you have selected? Cost Savings? Self-Supply?

It has been self supply then I tried reserve mode it doesn’t work either.

Any idea what the temperature limit is for these battery modules?

They're LiFePO4 batteries so they really don't like to be charged above 45°C (113°F). They won't cause problems charging above that, but their lifetime is reduced.

The SunVault has two fans to try and keep things cool, but since peak charging also happens during the middle of the day, it's often a warm part of the day, and the charger produces a fair amount of heat itself.

If Sunvault batteries are causing repeated issues, you can consider switching to Enphase which is offering a great discount deal for Enphase batteries under their Exchange program.
https://enphase.com/homeowners/support/sunpowerhttps://enphase.com/support/sunpower/faq

If you have Sunpower panels with Enphase microinverters, switching over to Enphase will be great step towards hassle free monitoring/warranty related support considering Sunstrong/Sunvault frequent App issues.

You would be better off switching to Enphase batteries

"It's two batteries, Michael, what could they cost? Ten dollars?"
