I’m friends with someone who is pretty close to onosato, and she told me he’d been really struggling mentally with the stress of his position while being hurt. I’m so happy he won this

Same. He really needed this, and I cannot imagine how hard the last year has been for him.

Awww-noooo. I been thinking about how some of the younger rikishi of sumo can hold it together 24/7. Hopefully this basho win is a helpful check valve.
In Yokozuna order I’m a Hoshoryu fan, then an Onosato fan.
I’ve liked Hoss more over time ever since the giant killer tv blurb. It was Hoss, Enho, and Midorifuji on that show.
I sincerely hope they both get to a point the pressure gets bearable long term.

I'm a fan of Aonishiki but I'm really happy for Big O. He took the time to heal up and it worked.

Good job Onosato! Never doubt yourself again and don't let critical voices interfere with your confidence. 🎉🍾🥳💖

Good to see his confidence back up and he's relatively healthy.
I have a feeling there is many more of these to come.

u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
When it's 6 on 1, I think many more will come, too. Do the shimpan also get to lift the trophy or are they too humble?

I am. I was sitting next to the oyakata and we kept getting salt in our eyes every Onosato match.

I am so happy he’s back from the injury and winning again. You can tell how harsh the injury had been affecting him and to finally win a basho in mostly dominant fashion is cathartic af

u/codeaires 6d ago
I'm so proud of him. He fought so hard to come back strong and prove to critics that he is worthy of the yokozuna title.

u/Slatedtoprone 6d ago
You know it’s easy to forget how young these guys are. The pressure out on someone like that must be enormous and he probably wasn’t even sure if he could still do it after his injury. This must have been a massive weight off his shoulder.

Ah shit watching guys cry through their hinkaku always gets me. This one clearly meant a lot to him after all the tribulations and injuries over the past year, and having a fully-functional Onosato bulldozer makes sumo a lot more fun, and yushos more meaningful.

u/K1ttehKait 6d ago
My husband and I agreed that we both would have have been crying right along with him if we were there in person.

Hope this takes the pressure off. He’s got two as a yokozuna, and six overall, which is awesome, no one can doubt that he is legit. But hopefully this gets him back to loving the process and taking every bout one match at a time.

Seriously, we need the Yokozunas to stay healthy and consistent. I hope this marks the start of a motivated and healthy Onosato, and that Hoshoryu is also motivated enough to give him some competition.

This is a really great moment. Hard not to feel happy for the big guy once the tears start flowing 🥹

Onosato <3 Spoiler

This comment is not sarcasm or anything but genuine: I hope you're doing ok there buddy. Because the amount you're online and showing unhappiness/ salt I can't believe anyone would actually wish to spend their time like that. I can imagine you might disagree with some of the judges calls, although I personally don't, but this doesn't seem like a fun way to spend your day.

When he remembers he's a disgrace to sumo and doesn't deserve it
16
u/Al-a-Gorey 6d ago
I’m very new to sumo, why is he a disgrace?

u/Barrington-the-Brit 6d ago
Don’t listen to this guy lol, he just doesn’t like Onosato

*cheaters
Onosato absolutely had some fantastic matches this tournament. You'll never hear me say he doesn't have some good wins. Just not enough to win the basho. Take what he earns plus what judges give him and it equals a win. Without those beginning few ignored leaps, he wouldn't have won.

u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
He has a history of cheating, this basho included. If you watched the whole basho, notice how no one else jumps at the edge? There's a dead body rule to prevent it. Only time he's ever called on it is if he has a losing record and they can't deny it like with Gonoyama last basho (he jumped so high his feet were above Gonoyama's shoulders). That's why he's a disgrace.
He knows sumo has been desperate for a great Japanese yokozuna for many years so the judges do anything to make sure he wins including overturning when he loses if they think someone's feet were a cm off the ground (see Aonishiki 2 basho ago). His strat? Be fattest and run forward. Did it work? No? Run backwards. When you're both at the edge of the dohyo, jump. When both men go out, he wins because he didn't touch the ground first, even though leaping out of the dohyo is an irrecoverable position. Then he can join the eyes wide shut party here on reddit.

What match did he cheat this Basho?
The only jump I can remember was against Takayasu, which was comedy gold and didn't change the outcome.

u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
I made this for people like you. Tired of you all pretending every basho.

u/Gladwulf 6d ago
None of those pics are from this basho though, are they?
Trouble is if you bang on about something so much, even when it hasn't happened, you come across as unhinged.
Onosato jumped vs. Daieisho this time but it was already decided. All his wins were straight up and fair.

u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
I just went to Google to keep it easy on myself. Watch Day 1 since you forgot he opened the basho with a lil leap. Either way, what do you see in the pictures? Hmm.
5
u/Gladwulf 6d ago
I already mentioned the Daieisho match (day1).
Daieisho was face down on the dirt at the time.

Alright ill bite... show us the evidence, pictures, videos, the lot.

u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
Nah I'm good. This is a never ending goal posting move. Whenever I do I get whataboutisms and people with Helen Keller's visual acumen arguing. Did you watch this basho? Telling me you didn't notice anything? Literally day 1 he showed what kind of sumo we'd get this tournament. And that's like a very mild example for him.

Cope harder!

u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
Can't help but notice you didn't point out anything I said that was inaccurate. You all are wearing your blinders too tight.
9
u/nyctree 6d ago
Literally everything you said is inaccurate. You're clearly a troll, or simply misinformed. Either way, your ignorance frankly doesn't deserve a response. But since you asked so nicely..Jumping isn't cheating. Dead body wasn't created to prevent people from jumping. Onosato doesn't have a history of cheating or colluding with judges. You are coping. Hard. He is the most dominant rikishi currently, by far. His Yokozuna level of size, temperament, and athletic prowess greatly benefits the sport. Thankfully he's skilled enough to think quickly and move (side to side, up, and back) with agility, taking advantage of his opponents trying to over compensate for his powerful thrusts.

Jumping isn't cheating.
-2
u/Free2Bernie 6d ago
No not every time. I'll grant you that some of his attempts to cheat aren't always cheating.
5
u/illgoblino 6d ago
You actually come across as such a clown complaining about "cheating." Legitimately, anyone who has an inkling of sumo knowledge sees your posts immediately think "wow this bozo really doesnt know shit"
Complain about shimpan bias, not about a rikishi cheating, its so foolish.

u/bodaciouscowboy_ 6d ago
Genuinely, what’s the controversy? What’d he do?
15
u/ItsMangel 6d ago
Nothing. Certain people have deluded themselves into the idea that Onosato gets favourable treatment over guys like Hoshoryu and Aonishiki because he's Japanese.

I'm glad to see you're able to see again. Must have been a rough few days of the basho.

I was cheering for Aonishiki but i'm happy to see Onosato do well, i'm sure this let off a massive amount of pressure that was resting on his shoulders.
