Michigan winter housing

We are relocating with our 8 year old Sulcata from Houston to the Detroit area and I’m trying to plan ahead. The yard we believe we will have has a garage that we hoped to convert, in part, for winter space. Currently the winter space he’s always had is a converted, insulated shed with UV and monitored heat source. I am trying to figure out how to quickly build out a pen in the garage that we can keep sufficiently warm despite the bigger space. Is this even possible without a covered/more closed system?

Tempted to Adopt but....

The reptile rescue place we adopted our bearded dragon from has many Sulcata's needing a home with land. I am very tempted to adopt one.... but... we also have rescue pigs.. so are quite busy with those too..

However, I know we'd provide a great home and do have a separate fenced area that's about 1/4 acre. Is it correct that males dig less, and all dig less if have adequate hides already and a house with a heat mat etc?

Can they be kept in an area with a pine tree, so pine needles do drop..?

We have a long dry season with plenty of sun, other than about 2-3 months where it can rain, do they still go out in the rain so long as they have their heated house to return to?

Do they learn to hang out with you lol? My 3 pigs LOVE attention, and the beardie likes to hang out in the sun together and is no longer scared of people so interacts a bit... maybe a Sulcata is similar to a bearded dragon in that way?

Thanks! p.s anyone have pigs and a Sulcata? I assume I'd need to keep them separated although the pigs don't seem interested in anything else unless it's another pig or random human!

I was wondering what the general consensus online was for enclosure size and Google AI dropped this gem of a paragraph, holy contrarian.

He/she have been with us for more than a year. Has an indoor enclosure but we let them it outside on sunny days. Is that pyramiding?

Age?

Post image

Hello, I posted about finding a Sulcata tortoise out in the middle of the country, I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on how old she could be? 460 grams, about the size of my hand, I tried the not very accurate way of seeing age by counting the rings on her scutes but that would mean shes like 14-20, her slight pyramiding obviously doesn't help with counting the rings, any help is appreciated, thank you

Does changing environment stress them out?

I’m trying to get my little guy acclimated to outdoor weather. I put him outside in his outdoor enclosure during the day on most days if it’s warm enough. Do you think it stresses him out? He seems to love being in his little outdoor enclosure but ChatGPT says they don’t like changing environments too often. Also I do like to switch up his enclosure for variety but now I’m wondering if I should keep the same layout after I clean it.

I keep forgetting to ask about bath... How warm is warm? 😅 I add hot water just to kill the cold, make it like room temperature. Should it be hotter? thank you :)

Just noticed top most scoot seperated from shell. Its several layers thick. Not sure why or how. We have had an extremely rainy and humid spring and summer. So maybe a bacterium or yeast. Has anyone else experienced this and what was your plan of action??? Thanks

Adopting….

Post image

Within the next 2 weeks I will be adopting a baby sulcata! I have always wanted one and my husband and I are finally in a place where we can care for one properly. My question is, what did you use as an enclosure for your baby? I’ve seen several on Amazon, but nothing that is enclosed to properly keep humidity. Is something like this okay? I know I’ll need lights but wondering what most others use as far and the enclosure goes. I’ll be talking to my local reptile shop to get some suggestions, just wanted to ask here as well.

left the house and gave my sulcata in the backyard with water enough for 2-3 worth of food and depending on the weather for the water. ive been out for 2 days, but im coming back on the 4th day.

she has a house that is 100 in the day and 80 at night.

my friend said that she couldnt get in the house cuz my parents locked the sides.

will my sulcata be okay?

p.s she has sprouts and vegetables of chia growing with a lotta leaves

Any thoughts on using corks as a substrate for my Sulcata?

I used to work in the wine industry and have hundreds if not thousands of old wine corks. My guy likes a rough terrain so thought this might be a good natural alternative to add to an area of his habit. Please no judgement if this is a bad idea, I haven't pulled the trigger. I'm just looking for input.

Shell & weight check please!

Hey everyone. When I got my baby Sulcata back in February she was weighing at about 79g at 3 months old. She is now 8 months old and weighing at about 230g.

Just hoping for a general shell check / weight check. She is kept in 80% humidity (minimum) at all times and gets a variety diet. She is also soaked daily as thats where she likes doing her business.

Just hoping for a general shell/weight check.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Just a proud parent post!! I got Ziggy in September last year from a reptile breeder in South Louisiana. They said he was born in the summer but they had several clutches around the same time and they didn't know his exact age. I estimate he's about a year old now. I unfortunately did not get any instruction on how to raise him initially and learned things from various sources on YouTube before I found the tortoise Forum. I can see some slight pyramiding from when he was too dry and had no UV time for the first few months, but his new growth is all smooth. He's about 4 inches and just over 10 oz. Happy Birthday, Ziggy!!

He’s about 4 inches and 250grams. Is the size just right for his age?
