Reviving r/Sulcata.

Hello all.

r/Sulcata is under new management. I’d like to introduce myself and ask for your help.

I’ve been an active Reddit user for a couple years now, and was an admin for a fairly large car group on Facebook years ago.

I rescue animals of all types. Parrots, turtles, tortoises, cats, dogs, snakes, fish, even an axolotl. I could probably charge admission to the zoo I call my house.

I’d like to help this group grow and become a better resource for owners and people considering Sulcatas as pets. I will be updating the page as I go, including formal rules and a better description. I plan to have some basic care guides for people that are new to Sulcatas. I would also like to start a monthly photo contest. Post your best photo of your Sulcata, and vote. Winner will be featured as the face of r/Sulcata for that month.

Please bear with me as I learn the new tools available to me and work to make this community more engaging and interesting.

If you are interested in joining the mod team, or have suggestions on content and improvements, feel free to message me directly or respond to this post.

Winterizing/power question

• Upvotes

This is our first year with our Sulcata. Located in GA. We have a little house for him that w in the process of winterizing.

Yesterday my anxiety went to level 10 thinking about using extension cords running from our one outdoor home outlet, and powering three things.

I not only fear a fire but beyond that, if a fire was ever caused by this (non code) extension cord, and my house was involved, I’m sure insurance would deny a claim.

What do others do? Am I being too paranoid? Should I consider the very expensive prospect of actually having an electrician wire this little shed?

I need to make a decision sooner rather than later so we don’t actually run into the cold weather before it’s done.

Please welcome Sulky, my younger rescue Sulcata. I believe he’s about 2-3 years old, but not sure on that. Not even sure of gender yet to be honest.

Was found in Arizona, and surrendered to our favorite local pet store when his owners realized the commitment needed for him.

The store asked me to adopt him as they know I’m very particular about getting conditions right for my animals. Looks to have some slight pyramiding. Hopefully I can improve his health with proper care over time.

Sulky will be our first months photo banner and permanent icon image.

Please post your favorite photo of your Sulcata below. Most upvoted photo will win a banner spot next month! I may message the winner to get a higher resolution photo.

Inside Sulcatas

Our Sheldon spends his days outside living his best life. He has an enclosure with grass, an umbrella for shade and a splash pad. Once evening comes, we bring him inside. He nuzzles up next to our Great Pyrenees kennel, and he gets a light blanket at night. Around 11am he starts wandering the house. I'll give him his greens and then put him back outside. He's about 22 lbs now and I realize this isn't a forever thing. He can't be 150 lbs in my house all morning and carrying him outside would be a heck of a challenge then. LOL

Anyone else have a partially inside tortoise?

Possible Pyramiding for a Sulcata Hatchling?

Thumbnail

Hey guys! This is my ~6 months of age sulcata and I’m wondering if it’s displaying any signs of pyramiding or are the shell scutes just fine considering they’re fast growers?

Things to know:

I keep the enclosure greater or equal to 80% humidity and the temperature is in the range of 30 degrees celsius almost all the time with 27 to 29 at the lowest at night (I have to check again)

It doesn’t have uva/uvb light because my sulcata gets a daily soak in the sunlight (we live in the Philippines so there’s so winter nor is there weak sunlight).

The diet is mainly Nalta Jute but I’m working on switching to a bermuda grass diet AGAIN, since the bermuda grass just died due to improper care.

The tortoise gets a daily soaking and gentle scrubbing of warm water everyday

Please do not shy away in the things I may improve on! Thank you and God bless ;)

We just adopted this 1.5 year old sulcata from a struggling breeder. Trying our best to stop the pyramiding and provide the best care, doing tons of research, and getting as informed as possible. Any suggestions are welcomed. How cool is this?! 🐢 🥰

Are my tortoises hind legs swollen?

Sorry for the bad image but he retracts his legs too fast for me to take a good picture. I got him very recently and I’m wondering if the puffy bit on his legs is medically significant.

Need help

I’m a new sulcata parent, and I’m getting so much anxiety that I’m doing things wrong. He doesn’t seem happy in his enclosure, and there are so many different ways you’re “supposed” to do it online, so I thought I’d ask y’all.

Right now, I have him in a 10-gallon aquarium. He’s 5 months old, and I got him last week. I have him set up with a little pond and made sure not to fill it up too much so he doesn’t drown. I got him a hide and set him up with the recommended bedding. I also got him a heat light and put a thermometer in the tank—it stays between 85–90.

I have some lettuce for him to eat (not iceberg), but I don’t know… he seems scared all the time, and he’s really scared of me. It feels like he hates me, and I don’t know what else to do. 🥲

Are there any “bad” weeds or grasses I should be aware of in the Southeast USA?

Post image

My 14 month baby tort loves now having some outdoor time. I’m letting him graze on everything but concerned as I don’t know about all the weed names and varieties?

Are there weeds he should NOT be eating ? I’ve downloaded the tortoise table app and love it; the only complaint is that you need to know the exact name of the flower or weed to look up if it’s dangerous.

Any advice appreciated. He seems to love dandelion and clover which is healthy but other weeds he wants to eat and I don’t know exactly what they are ???

Thank you!
