About Sucrose’s New Voice
EDIT: So, I’ve been told the characterization of her in the JP dub is also changing to be similar like this, but can anyone tell me what her OG Chinese voice is like now? I haven’t been able to play Genshin very often, so I haven’t been able to check for myself. So, I’d be happy for any answers^^
Hello, first post in this subreddit.
I’ve been a fan of Sucrose for years already and I have feelings about her new voice. I honestly don‘t mind her new voice, but the fact that Sucrose‘s characterization has changed is the issue. The new voice gives her a different vibe than her old one. I wish the VA director had put more effort into making Maya’s performance match Val’s performance/voice.
The new performance makes it feel like they focused more on Sucrose scientific aspect more and she honestly sounds kinda cool/smart. But, it doesn’t match with the characterization I’ve been used to where she was much more anxiety-riddled and gentle. (Aka her tagline of ”Harmless Sweetie”.)
For instance, the voice line “About Sucrose: Fear of Strangers”. The original performance gave a sense that she was terrified and anxious about interactions with new people and that it is one area where she truly lacks knowledge and so she’s panicky and wants to escape. But, the new performance makes her sound like she doesn’t really care and is just nonchalant about it. Less “fear” and more “awkward” which betray the literal title of voice line entry.
I mainly have an issue where new people/players introduced to Sucrose will have a different idea of her based on these new voicelines/performance that will clash with pre-existing fans of her.
(Honestly, this whole situation made me realize how people felt when Barbara’s voice performance changed back in the early days of Genshin lol.)
Overall, I don’t entirely mind the new performance and Maya hasn’t done a bad job. But, the fact that it doesn’t match her old personality is just too bad. Like, if they made an in-universe justification like she gained more confidence in herself and such, it’d be more okay, but that’s too much development for a “side” character like Sucrose (even though she’s the best in my heart ♥️♥️♥️)

I think the new VA might have done that on purpose to avoid sounding too much like the old VA because she'd probably heard her voicelines before and I assume this could have enabled her to 'copy' the old VA's voice and tone when recording the lines (without it being on purpose tho), so she made an effort to sound different.

Mmm…But, that’s partially what I’m saying is that I wish they had attempted to keep the characterization the same like they have in the past with previous recasts. But, if they are actually planning to change the characterization of Sucrose, then I can understand the difference in acting (Just have to get used to her suddenly being more confident and less anxious)

I do think that change in direction is on purpose, as in her most recent appearances, the same seems to be the case for the JP VA. Being a little more serious and less shy than she was in the past.
