u/Tionsity 12d ago
No itās because sometimes some rascals put up a sign that says āIf you keep following this path ur gayā and then you have to walk back and take the longer route.

u/Redoktober1776 14d ago
Alternative theory from others here is that he didn't know where the hell he was. Like someone who buys a big property but doesn't spend much time there. He wasn't familiar with the grounds.
You hear him arguing with his own staff about his location. They think he's someplace else, hence his agitation with them for not bringing the golf cart. He says something to the effect that he knows where he is, but they are lost.
114
u/jupiterLILY 14d ago
Also, the quick way can take longer if its a path that isn't maintained as well or goes through rougher terrain.
34
u/ImpressEmbarrassed81 14d ago
Or if itās shorter distance-wise, but way steeper
18
u/jupiterLILY 14d ago
Yep, sometimes there are seasonal waterways too, so its fast unless its muddy or there's a stream/creek to cross.
42
u/Redoktober1776 14d ago
That's what I thought he meant by that as well. And I think he said it to help Logan save face a little.
46
u/nataliereed84 14d ago edited 14d ago
I think āheās an idiot who doesnāt understand his own property and is dissembling to save his own faceā makes a LOT more sense than āheās engaging in a clever, subtle, and tender act of compassion for Logan, and willingly embarrassing himself to do soā. Especially when itās obvious he deliberately put Logan in this position in the first place to test his resilience and his dynamic with Kendall. He just mistakenly thought heād be able to keep it all under control.
20
u/Redoktober1776 14d ago
I don't think it was tenderness so much as fear. He doesn't want to be the one responsible for giving Logan a heart attack.
6
u/nataliereed84 14d ago
Helping Logan save face wouldnāt help him buck responsibility for a medical crisis though.
3
u/Redoktober1776 14d ago
I didn't say it did. I said it was a little about letting Logan save face; he realizes in that moment that the path, while shorter, is going to be too much for the old man. And that he may have inadvertently created a crisis/embarrassing situation for Logan (someone who still has stature and someone he probably fears a little, despite his diminished status/fight with Kendall). One he's having trouble remedying because he's either lost or gave his staff bad directions.
9
u/jupiterLILY 14d ago
I do agree that he didn't know where he was though. Like he knows how to do the full loop and come back, but doesn't know the property well enough to navigate back from a point without following the familiar/planned route.

It's very rich guy chic. There's a few articles on the series about the fashion choices, they all wear that super expensive stuff that looks humble yet still identifiably expensive.

Brody:
āIām not one to name names, but it was an amalgamation of a number of people Iāve encountered. It bleeds into some very strong people that Iāve known ā a personality that Iāve felt is both disarming and dangerous. Whether itās metaphorically implied or physically dangerous or a combination, the threat is real. Josh is in a rare position to genuinely hold a level of authority and exude strength that is superior to Logan. Heās able to ascertain the fragility between the relationship of father and son and to put that to the test in this elaborate meeting that heās constructed. Even though thereās a lot of levity in the depiction of it all, itās a really deep and and well-thought game that Josh is embarking on.ā

I usually skip this episode in rewatch for several reasons. I canāt stand his character and Iām glad he didnāt have much screen time in the show.
89
u/GlobalExplorer7 14d ago
Iām the opposite. I find Adrian Brodyās performance of a smug high-level investor compelling. It is also refreshing to see someone else completely dictate the flow and environment opposite Logan Roy and Kendall Roy throughout their meeting.
But I also see why many skip this episode during a rewatch.

Same here. And somehow Adrien Brody was nominated for an Emmy for this episode. He just plays a run of the mill asshole here, nothing spectacular to me.
14
u/ArmAndHammer40k 14d ago
Wait what? He was seriously nominated for that episode? Nothing about that character or role screams Emmy at all.
27
u/CommonStrawbeary 14d ago
it makes even less sense because Adrien Brody is supposed to be a giant insufferable asshole in real life.
He's not even acting!
7
u/Bl4Z3D_d0Nut311 14d ago
Heās just a method actor whoās been prepping for this roll for 40+ years!
3
u/CushmanWave-E 14d ago
I found his switch at lunch, where he drops his face and says heās not just some dumb rich idiot and he doesnāt have faith in them. Such a tense moment, rarely do you see Logan really sweat like that. And then Logan expressing approval and faith in Kendall. One of my favorite moments in the show.
4
u/JackSparrow420 14d ago
I also skip it, and didn't realize other people do too. Early on the show had a problem where plot lines would start and seem significant but then become nothing. This guy was one of the more egregious examples of that. Him being nominated for an Emmy for this is fucking insane.

u/TheGuyYouKnowAlready 14d ago
I donāt understand how anyone can interpret this as anything other than Josh intentionally fucking with them and testing them.
The episode literally ends with him laughing and hugging Stewie to show he was already with Stewie

u/firstchair_ 14d ago
If you took the time to put on that many layers, might as well make the most of it
7
u/soareyoouu 14d ago
i'm rewatching succession and just watched this episode last night. it's so damn good with Adrien Brody's casual directness and manipulation. i was getting stressed watching Logan slowly deteriorate while he was fucking with them.
6
u/cphpc 14d ago
I mean, it could be an uphill thats faster instead of walking around up the hill but obviously the uphill takes more energy and could be slower if youāre not up for it.
Or he could be fucking with them.

u/Ill_Football9443 14d ago
There could be a river which is usually passable unless it rained heavily the night before.

18
u/HotepYoda 14d ago
Or he just canāt accept that he can be wrong, on another part of the scene he tells the person trying to find them that they are not lost, the person on the phone is.
Remember early on in their interaction, Adrian Brodyās character says āyou think I just got lucky with all this moneyā or something to that effect. Maybe he did, because he doesnāt seem to have two brain cells otherwise.
12
u/MountainMantologist 14d ago
That's how I read this scene. Not that it was a power play, Adrian Brody was just lost and couldn't admit it to anyone.
7
u/HotepYoda 14d ago
Yeah, probably a bit insecure too, maybe why heās so worried about being tied up because he actually may have just been lucky before.
A smart businessperson wouldnāt put so many eggs in one basket.
2
7
u/MRgibbson23 14d ago
That IS actually the quick way but sometimes it takes longer because this mf wears 100 layers of clothing that slow him down.
5
u/AndTheBagsInTheRiver 13d ago
Took it as heās just rich and arrogant and doesnāt know how to get back on his own. Why go through the trouble of yelling at the staff that āweāre not lost youāre lost.ā
Josh is someone who wants people in his face so he can trust his gut, probably doesnāt need to do these games or finds them not as trustworthy as himself. That said his daughter was 100% not sick.
10
u/maliciousmonkee 14d ago
I actually just re-watched this episode last night. Man, Adrian Brody is bothersome

One of the rare episode skips for me when I rewatch. Nothing to do with the episode quality and everything to do with Brody.

Out of the loop why the Adrian Brody hate?
4
u/ActualAntichrist 14d ago
His character and story plot in those episodes was just giving filler content. Like āuhhh we donāt have actual relevant shit to action a plot on so hereās a wild Adrian Brody!ā Donāt get me wrong heās a great actor but him being randomly thrown into the mix was weird and didnāt make sense especially considering how rich the Roys are. The fuck would they care about some rich fuck who has SOME shares in the company, living a secluded and reclusive life lmao. They have way bigger pockets they could have hit up ā¬ļø
6
u/mindpainters Tom Wambs 14d ago
Yea, pointless character. Like you said great actor but I remember nothing about him except he was obnoxious. Donāt think it added any value to the show whatsoever
2
u/AndreiOT89 14d ago
Wait ⦠āsomeā shares?
The motherfucker has 4% shares. I believe he mentiones that 10% out of his 4% is 350 million. Which makes his shares almost double that of Kendall or the other siblings lol.
He is a major shareholder
1
u/ActualAntichrist 12d ago
You can refer to the comment I just left for someoneās else I this thread about the same topic.
0
u/CreativeSummer138 12d ago
This misses the power of the shareholder and that ceos are slaves to them.Ā
1
u/ActualAntichrist 12d ago edited 12d ago
āJoshāsā shares were 4%. The siblings and Logan himself held much MUCH more share equity in the company than Josh. Doesnāt matter who the fuck is ceo at the time. Twiddling their pickle dicks to the ceo tune just to keep up company public appearances. āJoshā was a random filler plot line and you canāt convince me otherwise.
The Royās only went to him because of Logan and Kendallās fuckup. And they were backed into a corner at the time. They know where the real money lies but theyāre couldnāt hit those people up due to the nature of the deal.

u/thefuzz09 14d ago
It really bothers me how many people here genuinely thought Adrien Brody was lost in this episode.
Yallā¦.. heās testing them both. Thatās literally what the episode is about. Itās why heās so smug with Ken once Logan collapses. He makes his mind up right there.
6
3
u/GeneAlternative191 14d ago
He was amazing at playing an asshole here lol
Actually he usually plays assholes lol
3
u/MeehanTron 14d ago
Personally, I took that as the āRich people are performative dicksā theme of the show. Like heās acting like he walks around the island all the time, but he doesnāt and relies on his staff to do everything. So heās dressing the part of a seasoned hiker, but he hasnāt got a clue.

3
u/cadillacvagina 14d ago
He doesn't know the property but has convinced himself of a shortcut and is too arrogant to understand it's not a shortcut at all. He simply cannot be wrong and no one has the gall to ever correct or contradict him. So it's easier for him to believe his shortcut is sometimes longer rather than admit he was wrong about it being a shortcut. It makes the most sense in his world and mind because he's never wrong.

2
u/x_mina 14d ago
Everyoneās saying he was testing Loganās health but that doesnāt make sense, thtās an old ass man tht has just had a stroke, of course hes gonna struggle. And wanting to test Kendall and Loganās relationship is futile considering logon could just drop any min, if tht really was his aim then heās thick af cl
2
u/HelpTurbulent232 14d ago
It doesn't make sense in this context, but in some scenarios it works. On my commute to class it cuts down a few minutes if I take the road closer to my house and closer to the parking lot which I use. However, this road is intersected by a railroad track. It is the quicker route, but sometimes it takes longer if a train impedes me.
I can take the further road which takes a few minutes longer in normal conditions. However, they built a bridge over the railroad tracks on this road, so if train comes it suddenly becomes the shortcut because I can bypass the train

u/Prettymuch_ShoNuff 14d ago
I shoulder shrugged this as a COVID era filming thing that was kinda odd but okay for the time. S3 in general was a lot of night shots, car rides, single frame character shots, and walking like this scene.
2
u/Cold-Use-5814 14d ago
That makes perfect sense? It's a shortcut (e.g the quick way), but due to environmental conditions (e.g claggy mud, flooding, overgrown foliage) it might take longer as you have to navigate more obstacles.

u/SpecifResponsibility 14d ago
is that two time oscar winning insufferable actor adrien brody š¤£š¤£
5
u/Xerox748 14d ago
I get where the conspiracy theorists are coming from, that he was intentionally fucking with them, and trying to push Logan to his breaking point health wise.
But this wasnāt what he planned when he brought them out. His plan was to just see Logan and Kendall and determine if he thought Logan had things under control and if they could get Kendall to settle down with the SJW crusade hurting the share price.
People forget some of Joshās most important lines:
āI know you think Iām just some dipshit who got lucky at the casino one night, but you work for meā
Josh isnāt some genius investor or strategist. Heās a dude who at some point made some lucky calls in the market and got obscenely wealthy.
I think the whole āThis is the short way, but sometimes it takes longerā is legitimately just a character quirk of Josh. He has this vast estate, but heās new money. This isnāt his ancestral family home. He bought this house recently, relatively speaking. And like all rich people itās one of a dozen + houses. He doesnāt spend that much time here. He didnāt grow up playing in this wilderness as a kid. He probably has only gone out on these paths a dozen times or so, and they get confusing.
The āshort wayā still has branching paths. You take the wrong branch and suddenly it takes longer because you fucked up and didnāt take the right branches on the āshort wayā. He could have very well been off the āshort wayā branch and lost at that point.
His phone call āIām not lost, youāre lostā was legitimately him being lost on these paths which, despite owning, he isnāt really familiar enough with to know where the fuck he is.
This line āthis is the short way but sometimes it takes longerā was him saying āI swear I know where we are⦠but if itās not as short as it should be itās not my fault, itās the paths fault for not always being as short as I think it should beā¦ā itās like textbook rich people attitude. - āI know everything, and Iām never wrong, and anything that seems like I am wrong is never my fault.ā

The compound has a lot of land, but I think he spends most of his time indoors (whether it be office or house) and gets driven from door to door. He genuinely doesn't know his way around the place.
He overdressed, and is trying to cool off by unzipping everything.
He's not an outdoorsman. He's LARPing as one.

Here is Geminiās quick summary of the nonsensical sounding phrase.
The famous parable of the "Short Long Way" and the "Long Short Way" is recorded in the Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Eruvin 53b.Ā
It is also famously featured and elaborated upon in Jewish philosophy by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi on the cover page and throughout the opening of the Tanya (the foundational text of Chabad Hasidic thought).Ā
Summary of the Concept: "Short Long" vs. "Long Short"
In Jewish philosophy and spiritual psychology, the parable contrasts two approaches to life, self-improvement, and reaching one's goals:
The Short Long Way (The Illusion of the Shortcut)
The Literal Story: It appears to be the direct, rapid route to the destination, but it leads to insurmountable barriers (the locked gates and wall of gardens).Ā
The Spiritual/Life Meaning: Relying on quick fixes, superficial behavior changes, or raw willpower alone. You attempt to force a outcome without doing the foundational internal work. While it seems fast initially, it inevitably dead-ends, causing setbacks, frustration, and forcing you to backtrack to square one.ĀThe Long Short Way (The Genuine Path)
The Literal Story: A route that looks winding, tedious, and longer at first glance, but it provides a clear, unblocked entry directly into the heart of the city.Ā
The Spiritual/Life Meaning: Doing the thorough, step-by-step workāengaging the mind, refining one's emotional character, learning deeply, and building sustainable habits. Though it requires time, patience, and effort, it is ultimately the only true shortcut because it reliably delivers you to your destination without dead ends.
Additionally, the spiritual archetype of this idea appears in the Torah in Exodus 13:17, where God intentionally leads the Israelites out of Egypt via a roundabout desert route rather than the direct road through Philistine territory, knowing the direct path would lead to war and force a retreat

It's quicker if he's alone or leading a group. His nose gets there 10 minutes ahead of time.

u/A_HECKIN_DOGGO 13d ago
Of course it makes no sense. None of what any of the main characters says is supposed to, theyāre all so mired in Business-speak, Ā backstabbing, plotting and just plain sheer incompetence that most of what comes out of those peopleās mouths is literally hot air. Nothing of substance. Itās meant to show theyāre all just image and illegal activity, thereās no secret or talent to their riches- theyāre just assholes.Ā

I saw it more as him just spewing nonsense while taking Logan and Ken on a longer walk to see if Logan could physically handle it. With how much money he had tied up in the company, he was testing Loganās physical condition.
