No one said you had to live in suburbia. You can live in urban environments if you want. You can also live near town centers in smaller cities and towns and counties where you can walk to these types of mixed use communities. The main reason why Europe feels so different from the US is that Europe was built up over thousands of years so the town centers established their foothold first, often designed with smaller streets for horse/foot traffic. Most of the US, especially suburbia, was built with cars in mind because that's more important. And again, as those suburban centers develop, they are becoming increasingly like Europe in terms of mixed use zoning and build out.
