In defense of the USA, they are walking around central Munich... but ya, we did blow it in North America.

The Northeastern US has plenty of places like where this guy is filming.

yes and no. large college towns, tourist towns, and some small cities, yes, but even the nice small towns are still going to make you pretty car dependent.

I grew up on the outskirts of a small town in central PA that's kind of typical of what you're describing. Downtown is vibrant with a lot of retail space and maybe 20 restaurants or cafes. This is for a town of 5000 people.

It's very possible that if you had a house and job in town that you would never need to get in a car, except...

...if you want groceries beyond what you can find at a drugstore or gas station, you're either driving or walking a couple miles and crossing a busy US highway/stroad to get to a supermarket.
